Roger Maris’ Iconic 1961 Yankees Jersey Could Fetch $1 Million At Auction – Who Is Buying?

Roger Maris

A piece of baseball history is set to make waves in the memorabilia market as Roger Maris’ 1961 New York Yankees jersey goes under the hammer. Heritage Auctions has announced that this rare artifact, worn during Maris’ record-breaking season, could command bids up to $1 million.

A Historic Season For Roger Maris

In 1961, Maris etched his name in baseball history by smashing 61 home runs, breaking Babe Ruth’s long-standing single-season home run record of 60, set in 1927. The achievement was monumental, considering the immense pressure Maris faced from fans, media, and even his own teammates.

Why This Jersey Is So Valuable

This particular jersey holds significant historical value. According to Heritage Auctions, Maris wore only two home jerseys during the 1961 season. The photo authentication service MeiGray has matched this jersey to 13 games, during which Maris hit five home runs. The other jersey from that season is enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, making this auction a rare opportunity for collectors.

As of now, bidding has already surpassed $300,000, with several days remaining until the auction concludes during Heritage’s February 22-23 Winter Platinum Night Sports Catalog Auction.

Yankees Strengthening Roster For 2025 Season

While the Yankees continue to honor their rich history, they are also making key roster moves ahead of the 2025 MLB season.

Yankees Sign Pitcher Tyler Matzek

The team recently signed veteran left-handed pitcher Tyler Matzek to a minor league deal. Matzek, who played a pivotal role in the Atlanta Braves’ 2021 World Series run, is looking to bounce back after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023. The Yankees hope he can provide valuable depth to their bullpen.

Concerns Over Yankees’ Depth Against Left-Handed Pitching

While the Yankees boast one of the most powerful lineups in MLB, a recent analysis has highlighted their weakness against left-handed pitchers. With some key departures and struggles from specific players, the team is now exploring trade options or free-agent signings to address this issue before the season begins.

Off the Field: Aaron Judge Becomes A Father

In personal news, Yankees captain Aaron Judge and his wife, Samantha Bracksiek, recently welcomed their first child, Nora Rose, on January 27, 2025. Judge, who had an MVP-caliber season in 2024, shared his excitement about balancing fatherhood with his responsibilities as the leader of the Yankees.

What’s Next For The Yankees?

As the 2025 MLB season approaches, the Yankees are expected to make more roster moves to strengthen their lineup and pitching staff. With Spring Training just around the corner, all eyes will be on how the team addresses its weaknesses and prepares for another championship run.
