Red Bull is currently facing a dilemma regarding its second driver. While Max Verstappen remains a strong asset for the team, Sergio Perez has struggled with ongoing performance issues, prompting fans to call for a new driver to take over the RB20 for the remainder of the 2024 season and beyond. However, during the summer break, RBR’s management reaffirmed Perez’s position for the current season.

Despite his initial reservations about this decision, Helmut Marko supported Checo’s experience navigating challenges. Marko has previously highlighted the impressive skills of drivers within the Red Bull academy, indicating that stakeholders are also inclined to consider bringing in a new face. Recently, he confirmed that either Yukis Tsunoda or Liam Lawson is expected to step in for Perez in 2025.

“Youth Is In Trend Again,” Red Bull To Pick Between Tsunoda And Lawson As Verstappen’s Potential Partner

Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s senior advisor, recently shared insights about the team’s plans for Max Verstappen’s future teammate during an interview with ORF. When asked about the potential candidate for Verstappen’s partner next season, Marko suggested that the team is inclined to choose a driver from their junior program. He noted that a trend towards youth is emerging, citing examples of other teams like Mercedes with Kimi Antonelli and Haas with Oliver Bearman adopting similar strategies. Marko also expressed optimism about Franco Colapinto, who has impressed during his time with Williams, potentially earning a seat in Formula One.

The Austrian executive further elaborated on Red Bull’s decision to give Liam Lawson an opportunity in the Red Bull seat, explaining that the choice between Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda was motivated by the need to determine who was faster. Red Bull aimed for a direct comparison to assess the speed and performance of both drivers. This move could signify a promotion for Lawson within the Red Bull ranks, as he was initially brought in to replace Daniel Ricciardo and given a chance to showcase his talent. Earlier in 2023, Lawson had several opportunities to demonstrate his abilities, earning the approval of Red Bull management. Therefore, if he can outperform Yuki Tsunoda in the final six races of 2024, he could be in line to team up with Verstappen in 2025.

While Red Bull senior discusses the team’s future, the present racer, Sergio Perez, might wonder about his F1 career. The Mexican racer has been out of form for the majority of the 2024 season, putting his team in serious trouble. Therefore, until the 34-year-old pulls out a magical performance in the remaining six rounds, his chances of getting a seat in 2025 appear slim. While the financial hassle remains a source of worry for the Bulls, the team wouldn’t pick money over performance. As the F1 season enters its final rounds, Checo has much to prove.
