Following a series victory over the Seattle Mariners, the New York Yankees officially clinched the playoff berth and celebrated it to the fullest back in the clubhouse. However, once the euphoria settled, the Yankee unit was back to business with a series sweep against the Oakland Athletics.

The New York Yankees are all set to claim the AL-East division following a series victory against the Baltimore Orioles. That being said, with days left for the postseason, the Yanks shuffled its bullpen depth and shut down an experienced relief pitcher for the season, citing failure to recover from injury in time.

With Jake Cousins back on IL for the remainder of the season, this could have been Lou Trivino’s opportunity to make a comeback with the New York Yankees following a long injury layoff. Just over a week ago, manager Aaron Boone mentioned that Trivino had been building a lot of good momentum during his rehab assignment, marking his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Unfortunately for Trivino, he will not be joining the team in playoffs, as he has been sidelined once again with a new arm-related injury. Boone announced during the team’s recent trip to Oakland that Trivino would be shut down for the season due to a shoulder issue. This setback is particularly disappointing as Trivino hadn’t pitched since September 13.

His last outing in the MLB came during the 2022 postseason after being traded from the Athletics alongside starter Frankie Montas in a deal that did not pan out well for the New York Yankees. He subsequently underwent elbow surgery in the spring of 2023. Notably, prior to this injury, Aaron Boone had expressed optimism about Trivino’s progress. He noted that the reason Trivino and fellow right-hander Cody Poteet were still rehabbing was due to a lack of available spots on the roster. However, they remained viable options for October based on their performances in the minors. However, Trivino’s recent injury has changed those plans. Moreover, in the wake of Trivino’s absence, the Yankees promoted prospect Clayton Beeter to the active roster as a replacement for Jake Cousins. Meanwhile, Poteet was activated from 60-day IL and optioned to Triple-A due to a lack of space on the active roster.

New York Yankees designated relief pitcher Ron Marinaccio for assignment last week and he was recently claimed off the waivers by Chicago White Sox only to be optioned back to Double-A Birmingham. He had a solid run with the Yanks, posting a 1-0 record and a 3.86 ERA over 16 relief appearances during his third season with the team.

Across his tenure in New York, Ron Marinaccio accumulated a 6-5 record with a 3.22 ERA in a total of 101 relief outings. This season, Marinaccio performed exceptionally well at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, finishing with a 1-3 record, a stellar 2.04 ERA, and eight saves. However, he couldn’t find a place in the Bronx Bombers’ postseason roster due to competition.
