Luis Gil, the right-handed rookie pitcher of the New York Yankees, was promoted to the starting rotation ahead of opening day as Gerrit Cole’s elbow injury created a vacant spot. While the fans had their reservations about Gil, given his injury history and lack of experience, the starter proved everybody wrong.

Luis Gil, from being a rookie starter, went on to become the New York Yankees’ best-starting pitcher of the season in just a couple of months. He was unstoppable in May as AL named him pitcher and rookie of the month. Amid this, the team’s pitching coach has revealed if they plan to enforce any workload management plan on Gil.

Yankees Not To Limit Luis Gil’s Innings Anytime Soon

Luis Gil has been a bright spot in the New York Yankees’ pitching rotation this season. His performances have showcased his potential to be an All-Star starter this year, which also happens to be his rookie season. In his 13 starts so far, Gil has a 2.04 ERA and 90 strikeouts. The pitcher went nuclear in May, as he went 8-0 with a 1.07 ERA. The newly implemented change-up has been the key to Gil’s turnaround this year. However, concerns surrounding Gil’s health are currently being raised by the fans considering the pitcher’s ill-injury history. Luis Gil has had issues with his elbow and shoulder in the past. He went through Tommy John surgery in 2022 and also missed last year with an elbow issue.

However, the New York Yankees do not plan to disrupt Luis Gil’s momentum just yet. Pitching coach Matt Blake confirmed that he has not asked Gil to limit his innings. These kinds of decisions are not spontaneous and require detailed contemplation on factors such as fatigue and stress outside of his innings on the mound. While the decision to forego a workload management plan might maximize Gil’s immediate impact, it does raise some concerns.

Without a structured workload plan, there is a risk of overuse, which could lead to injuries. Young pitchers, in particular, are susceptible to arm fatigue and related injuries if not managed carefully. Hence, the Yankees’ decision not to implement a specific workload management plan for Luis Gil is bold and somewhat unconventional in today’s game.

Gerrit Cole Successfully Wraps Up Second Rehab Game

Meanwhile, New York Yankees ace and reigning AL CY Young pitcher Gerrit Cole’s season debut continues to get delayed with an elbow nerve inflammation injury. Cole pitched his second rehab start on Sunday for Double-A Somerset Patriots, allowed one run, and fanned four hitters in 4.2 innings pitched.

That being said, the Yankees are reportedly planning to allow Gerrit Cole a minimum of four rehab starts, which means Cole could be eligible for reinstatement from IL on June 25. Notably, Cole pitched his first rehab start last week, which was successful. He is gradually building up his innings length before the Yanks declare him fit enough for the majors.
