The New York Yankees starting rotation has collapsed following a strong start to the year. Despite ace Gerrit Cole’s comeback in June, the Yanks pitchers have been highly inconsistent on the mound, which is costing the team important games in the crucial phase of the season.

That being said, the upcoming mid-season trade deadline presents an opportunity for the New York Yankees to fix the rotation holes by making bold yet significant moves. And interestingly, a reunion opportunity has opened up for the Yanks as LA Dodgers recently designated a former Yankee starter for assignments earlier this week.

The New York Yankees are reportedly considering a reunion with left-handed pitcher James Paxton after his recent designation for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Paxton, who previously pitched for the Yankees during the 2019 and 2020 seasons, could provide much-needed depth and experience to the Yanks’ pitching staff as they aim for a deep playoff push in the second half of the season. Notably, Paxton has an 8-2 record and a 4.43 ERA  in 18 starts this year for the Dodgers. However, due to injury concerns and inconsistency, LA decided to cut his leash. Regardless, the Dodger’s roster move could be a blessing in disguise for the Yanks as it gives them an opportunity to seek a reunion.

Interestingly, James Paxton is 15-6 with a 3.82 ERA in 29 starts in 2019. Moreover, with Clarke Schmidt on the injury list and rookie Luis Gil struggling with the full-season grind, the New York Yankees can use an upgrade. Also, Paxton’s left-handedness adds a different dynamic to the Yanks’ right-handed rotation. His ability to neutralize left-handed hitters and provide a different look could be beneficial in matchups against division rivals. There are, of course, concerns regarding Paxton’s durability. His injury history is well-documented. And hence, the Bronx Bombers would need to carefully manage his workload to keep him healthy for the remainder of the season. However, the potential upside of reuniting with Paxton could outweigh the risks, especially if he can recapture his previous form. Overall, as the trade deadline approaches, reuniting with James Paxton could be a calculative move that pays dividends in the Yanks’ quest for postseason success.

Meanwhile, in the latest update, Jon Morosi of MLB Network claimed that the New York Yankees had shown significant interest in Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Chad Green. Interestingly, Green pitched in the Bronx for seven seasons before he was traded in 2022. Notably, Yanks’ interest was driven by the pitcher’s strong first half, where they owned a 1.88 ERA, 24 strikeouts, and seven saves in 28 appearances.

Bullpen depth has been an issue for the New York Yankees all season long. Clay Holmes is not being able to save games with the rest of the relief corps being highly inconsistent as well. Hence, any help will be appreciated and with trade deadline approaching the time is best the front office to make a move.
