REPORTS: Warriors Throw 2-Year Extension Olive Branch To Klay Thompson Ahead Of Free Agency

Klay Thompson is an icon of the Golden State Warriors franchise. After what he has done for the team, it is hard to imagine the shooting guard in any other uniform. At least the Dub Nation would not want to see that. But the truth is he is getting old, and so is the core group of the Dubs. Along with the veteran sharpshooter, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are getting nearer to their Father Time. Then, the GSW will have to accept the fact that they have to move on someday from the iconic Dubs trio. This offseason, they have a chance to let Klay Thompson go.

But they might not be ready yet to part ways with one of their ‘Splash Brothers.’ Even Steph Curry mentioned after the Warriors lost to the Sacramento Kings in the play-in game that he can’t imagine playing without “Those two guys, and that’s what I’m afraid of.” There have been rumours that Thompson is willing to explore his external options in free agency. Lately, though, the Golden State Warriors may have offered a two-year extension to the veteran shooting guard.

Did Warriors Offer A Two-Year Extension To Klay Thompson?

On Thursday, Tim McMahon of ESPN appeared on The Hoop Collective. During that episode, he revealed that there is a rumor of a two-year contract extension that the Warriors may have offered Thompson. Ahead of Klay’s free agency, the Dubs may have a two-year offer on the table. Moreover, McMahon mentioned that in some of these cases, “The value of the deal is as big as the duration of it.” Perhaps the number of years may mean more to the veteran shooting guard than the price at this point in his career. On Monday, NBC Sports’ Monte Poole reported that Klay Thompson is looking for a deal that lasts a minimum of three years. There has been a ‘New league rule’ that allows the franchises to negotiate with their own free agents.

On June 30, Thompson will be an unrestricted free agent. Prior to that, he is eligible to re-sign with the Dubs. However, both parties will have to overcome some hurdles to sign an extension finally. Last season did not end well for either the Warriors or Thompson. The team struggled throughout the season. Most importantly, the Dubs trio – Steph, Klay and Dray were clearly not at their best. But Klay Thompson had his worst season in the NBA since the 2012-2013 season. Hence, before finally signing and confirming the extension, both parties may think twice.

Rumors Suggest Magic Is Close To Sign The Dubs Sharpshooter

Since the 2023-2024 season, there has been “No notable movement” between the GSW and Klay Thompson regarding a potential contract extension, said The Athletic’s Anthony Slater on May 30. Klay finished the 2023-2024 season with a 17.9 points per game average. That marked his lowest average since the 2012-2013 season. He kept going back and forth as he started in some games, and then there were a lot of games where he came off the bench.

Clearly, he was struggling both offensively as well as defensively. Then, The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Slater as well suggested that the Orlando Magic and Thompson have “Mutual interests.” Moreover, the Magic may have a better cap space than the Warriors to make a better offer to the Dub’s veteran sharpshooter.
