Formula One is a dynamic sport in which the finest engineers and physicists work together to innovate a powerful racing machine. Thus, while the results are decided on the racing track, they are impacted by the technical minds off the field.

While Red Bull was the leader in the car development battle, it has slipped down in recent times. However, it was inevitable as others figured out the key to unlocking the potential of ground effect. Meanwhile, Pierre Wache has opened up about the RBR’s approach to further innovations.

Pierre Wache Accepts The Red Bull Issue With Rivals Catching Up

Pierre Wache, the Red Bull technical chief, recently discussed the team’s current challenges and development approach. He admitted that in their pursuit of pushing the RB20 to its limits, they may have overextended in certain areas, leading to some undesirable characteristics for the drivers. Wache stressed that success in Formula 1 is relative and dependent on the performance of other teams. He pointed out that Red Bull’s dominance last year was partly due to their competitors underperforming, a situation that has changed this season with rivals stepping up their game.

While Wache believes the RB20 is an improvement over last year’s RB19, he acknowledges that there is still significant room for enhancement. The team is focused on refining the car to offer their drivers a more competitive machine, making these improvements by the end of the current season and continuing into the following year.

Wache also highlighted that the performance ceiling in Formula 1 is not static. Teams often learn from each other’s innovations, and while many have been incorporating Red Bull’s ideas in recent years, Red Bull, too, benefits from its competitors’ breakthroughs. This exchange of ideas is helping to raise the overall performance level in the sport, creating a constantly shifting and competitive environment.

The French engineer expressed surprise that their competitors took longer than expected to catch up. He revealed that the team had anticipated a stronger challenge from their rivals much earlier in the season.

Reflecting on the 2022 season, Wache noted that Ferrari initially had the fastest car, but Red Bull eventually managed to assert dominance. For 2023, the team was prepared for significant competition but found it less intense than expected. As they look forward to 2024, Red Bull anticipates a tougher challenge from their competitors. Wache pointed out that the current regulations impose performance limitations, making it difficult to achieve major improvements. Nonetheless, the team had expected their rivals to close the gap sooner, a process that only began after the first few races of the season.
