The Golden State Warriors are looking for redemption in their next season. In the 2023-2024 season, the Dubs could not make the playoffs. They were out in the play-in game against the Sacramento Kings. Since then, they have been through some shocking news, like franchise icon Klay Thompson choosing to leave. Later, the GSW traded the sharpshooter to the Dallas Mavericks. It was an official confirmation of the end of the “Splash Brothers” and the Dubs Dynasty. They had won four NBA Championships together in a span of eight years.

But in this offseason, Klay bid farewell to the Bay Area-based team and joined the Mavs. Hence, the Warriors are looking to rebuild the team again to contend for the NBA Championship. But now it is hard to point out one player who can play the role that Klay Thompson did for 13 years. It will be challenging to find such a great supporting cast around Stephen Curry again. But the Dubs are looking at the young stars on their roster to take on the responsibility. Lately, Jonathan Kuminga demanded a massive five-year contract.

Recently, the Golden State Warriors managed to cultivate some financial flexibility. It might prove to be a vital change as their young star, Jonathan Kuminga, demanded a five-year contract. Lately, Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported on the podcast ‘No Cap Room’ about JK’s demands. He said that the fourth-year forward of the Dubs has been seeking a five-year maximum contract worth $224 million from the franchise. In the 2021 NBA Draft, the Warriors selected Kuminga as the number seven overall pick. As per reports, JK seeks to get what Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley, Scottie Barnes, and some more from the same lottery three years ago received from their respective teams.

The young forward has been blossoming into an essential cog in the starting lineup of the GSW. Hence, he seeks a maximum contract extension to justify his role in the team’s future. During the last season, Kuminga averaged 16.1 points, his career-high performance, along with 4.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and played almost 26.3 minutes per game. He is just 21 years old and is entering the last season of his current four-year contract with the Warriors. That rookie-scale contract is worth $24.9 million, which he signed after the Warriors drafted him. He can become a free agent after the 2024-2025 season. But the Warriors will need JK as the bridge to their future.

Why Warriors Should Meet JK’s Demands?

The Golden State Warriors are attempting to build a bridge to the future as they want to stay competitive in the league. Arguably, Jonathan Kuminga can be the most essential piece of the puzzle for their future. Moreover, the Dubs are trying to maximize their present but would like to ensure that they won’t jeopardize the long term.

Since they had to trade Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks, there has been a huge void behind Stephen Curry. Now, Jonathan Kuminga can play the role to fill the massive void in the team’s offense. Then, that might boost his value to the point where Mike Dunleavy may feel comfortable offering JK the maximum contract he has been reportedly looking for.
