The New York Yankees, after missing playoffs in 2023 with awful record, not only booked a postseason berth but also clinched AL-East division in 2024. They will enter playoffs next week and are premier contenders for the World Series trophy that has not returned to Bronx since 2009.

That being said, the upcoming playoff stint could be a farewell campaign for a few Yankees players. A lot of contracts are expiring and hitting arbitration next off-season which could forced the front office to revamp the roster for the future. Amid this, a second baseman is counting his days down while preparing for the playoffs.

Second baseman Gleyber Torres is preparing for what could be his final postseason with the New York Yankees as he faces free agency following the 2024 playoffs. Reflecting on the uncertainty of his future, Torres admitted he has thought about the possibility of leaving the Bronx but is focusing on the present. “Sometimes I do think about it. The future is difficult to predict. I’m trying to enjoy everything with my teammates,” Torres said. Despite an inconsistent season, Torres has rebounded in the second half, posting a solid .782 OPS over his last 61 games. His struggles earlier in the year, including errors and mental lapses, left him frustrated. But he eventually found his rhythm after the All-Star break.

Although Gleyber Torres has faced criticism for occasional mental errors and baserunning mistakes, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has continued to trust him in the lineup. A recent baserunning blunder cost the Yanks in a game against the Orioles. Regardless of the mishaps, Torres remains focused on improving his game and contributing to the team’s playoff run. “These playoffs are gonna be really special. I’ve learned a lot this year, and we got to celebrate,” he added. That being said, with the Bronx Bombers having already clinched the AL East title and fighting for the best record in the American League, Torres is determined to finish the season strong. His contract is set to expire, and given his defensive lows and offensive inconsistency, the Yankee front office is unlikely to allow him a free pass. An extension offer appears unlikely for Torres momentarily.

After clinching the AL-East division title on Thursday, the New York Yankees earned a home-field advantage for the ALDS. However, they dropped an opportunity to extend that advantage all the way to the ALCS with a 4-2 loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Carlos Rodon restricted the Pirates to 2 runs in 5.1 innings pitched.

However, relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle allowed a go-ahead two-run home run which resulted in an unexpected defeat for the New York Yankees. Notably, following division victory celebrations, Aaron Boone had rested the seniors from the Friday game. The inexperienced lineup cracked under pressure. But the series is still up for grabs as actions resumes on Saturday.
