DJ LeMahieu, who was once hitting at an average of .400, signed a six-year extension worth $90 million with the New York Yankees in 2021. He scaled new heights in the COVID-restricted 2020 season, due to which the Yanks decided to bet on an aging player. But in hindsight, it proved to be a big mistake.

The New York Yankees front office hasn’t been the wisest, largely when it comes to off-season acquisitions. DJ LeMahieu is one of the many misfires that happened under the reign of Brian Cashman. That being said, with the 36-year-old back on IL for the second time this season, it’s perhaps time to bid farewell to the Silver Slugger.

DJ LeMahieu’s time with the New York Yankees appears to be nearing its end, as the veteran infielder faces mounting challenges both on and off the field. Since signing the $90 million extension contract with the Yanks, DJ has averaged 120 games per season as each of his seasons from 2021-2024 have been massively marred by injuries. His average during this period stayed at 252/.336/.362 for a .698 OPS, 10 home runs, and 43 RBIs. This season, LeMahieu missed the first 55 games of the season due to a foot injury, and after a painful stretch, he landed on IL again with a hip injury. Only this time, he is potentially ruled out for the season.

That being said, the hip injury could prove to be a blessing in disguise for the New York Yankees, as it’s high time they cut the 36-year-old infielder from the roster. DJ LeMahieu owes $30 million for the next two seasons, and if a trade opportunity comes up, the Yanks would be more than happy to agree on an expensive release. While the choice is tough, given the financial loss, the front office made a couple of similar decisions last year when they released Aaron Hicks and Josh Donaldson. As far as infield depth is concerned, Jazz Chisholm Jr is doing a good job in short sample size. Additionally, the Bronx Bombers can always look for upgrades in the off-season. Overall, as the offseason approaches, the New York Yankees’ management will need to make critical decisions, and DJ LeMahieu’s status will be one of the key considerations.

Aaron Boone Optimistic On Championship Odds

With a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox powered by Juan Soto’s walk-off hit, the New York Yankees have extended their lead for AL-East’s first place to two games over defending division champions Baltimore Orioles. Besides winning the division, the Yanks have an ideal chance of winning the prized World Series championship as well.

Amid a mini-slump, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has stated that his team stands a good chance at winning the ring, something that hasn’t been done in the past 15 years. “We have as good a chance as anyone right now to win this thing,” Boone said. While the skipper is confident, he needs his team to come together in October.
