Planet F1

Adrian Newey was the mastermind behind Red Bull’s superior cars in the last few years. However, the famous car designer has been part of the Milton Keynes team since its inception. Over the years, he has helped the RBR team dominate the grid in different eras. For instance, Sebastian Vettel was lucky enough to drive the Newey-designed cars back in 2010, which saw him become the most successful driver at that time. Moreover, the Austrian team, along with Vettel, dominated the grid for four years in a row. They won both constructor and driver’s titles between 2010 and 2013. But then came a phase called the turbo-hybrid era in 2014 that saw Mercedes dethrone Red Bull.

For eight years in a row since 2014, the Silver Arrows had a hegemony on the grid until, in 2022, the Milton Keynes team dethroned them again. Adrian Newey has been the most successful car designer in the ongoing cost cap era. Other teams were struggling with their car’s pace in the last three years, but Red Bull kept getting stronger. Thanks to Newey-designed cars and Honda’s engine, RBR won 21 of 22 races last year. But things fell apart in 2024, and Newey is all set to join Aston Martin next year.

Since the start of the 2024 season, rumors of internal turmoil at Red Bull was a hot topic of discussion. Apparently, several employees are not happy with Christian Horner continuing as a team principal. Albeit, Horner and Adrian Newey have worked at RBR for a long time, the latter was not happy with the former either. Eventually, Newey announced his departure from the reigning champions. Every fan was waiting to know which team will be lucky to sign the famous engineer and aerodynamicist. Over the years, Newey has been successful in F1 and also in IndyCar racing. But the chief technical officer of Red Bull had mentioned in his book that his dream was to join Ferrari and work with Lewis Hamilton someday.

Next year, that dream could have been a reality. Moreover, the Prancing Horse and the seven-time champion would have loved to see Newey joining them. However, on September 2, Mail Sport reported that Adrian Newey is all set to snub swansong with Lewis Hamilton. As he gets ready for committing the last stage of his illustrious career of a car designer and aerodynamicist to the Silverstone-based Aston Martin after signing a 20 million pound deal. He has turned down several offers from different suitors, especially Hamilton and Ferrari.

The 65-year-old race engineer has been part of the Formula 1 world for a long time. He has seen the evolution of the sport. Newey has also worked with the F1 legend Ayrton Senna. Lately, the British car designer opted to sign with Aston Martin but not Ferrari. It is surprising and shocking for many fans and experts out there. But Mail Sport used the quote saying, “Newey, the man who can see air.” They understand why the car designer chose Aston, as they said, “The Silverstone-based team is determined to be the superteam of the future.”

An F1 pundit told Mail Sport several months ago that Ferrari and Newey would sign soon. But they never did despite Lewis Hamilton even admitting that Newey was top of his list of dream colleagues. Last June, Newey visited the swanky 200 million pounds worth factory of Aston Martin. That visit to the gates of Silverstone helped Adrian Newey make up his mind. Moreover, experts believe that the scale and the cutting-edge possibilities of the new factory of Aston Martin gobsmacked the 65-year-old design chief.
