NBA 2022-23 season final is currently underway, wherein Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat are locking horns for the ultimate title. The Nuggets are leading 2-1 as Heat continue to struggle. Nonetheless, the off-season will commence in a few weeks, and trade rumors have already flared up all over the internet. Moreover, the Los Angeles Lakers have dominated the rumors as their star forward LeBron James has threatened retirement.

Not only that, many members of the new-look Lakers are set to hit free agency this off-season. Hence, the front office’s hands are full. Meanwhile, the purple and gold still remain unsure about point guard D’Angelo Russell. After a promising start, the guard’s numbers plunged into the postseason, due to which the team is skeptical over his contract extension. That being said, a new potential point guard candidate could be up for grabs as his current team is mulling over waiving him off.

Reports: Phoenix Suns To Waive Off Chris Paul

Chris Paul’s arrival in Phoenix marked a turning point for the Suns. His leadership, on-court brilliance, and veteran presence elevated the team’s performance. Paul played a crucial role in the Suns’ journey to the NBA Finals, where they fell short against the Milwaukee Bucks. Despite the defeat, Paul’s impact on the team’s success cannot be understated. However, his 2022-23 season was largely underwhelming. The 38-year-old averaged 13.9 points and 8.9 assists per game in 59 appearances. Hence, the Suns are looking to cut him loose.

As per Chris Haynes, Phoenix Suns have reportedly informed Chris Paul that he will be waived, which in turn would make him an unrestricted free agent for the off-season. The Suns acquired Kevin Durant via trade during the season and clearly have space for only one veteran. Hence, Paul will have to make the cut. Also, another major reason could be the financial constraint. The Suns are only guaranteed to pay him $75 million out of his original four-year, $120 million deal. Hence, by waiving off the point guard, the team can potentially create salary cap space to pursue other roster upgrades or re-sign key players. All things considered, the future Hall of Famer is unlikely to keep his place in Phoenix for the upcoming season.

Are the Lakers Interested In Chris Paul?

One way or the other, Chris Paul will be up for grabs this off-season. The point guard has vast experience and is also a future Hall of Fame candidate. Hence, teams, including the Lakers, could be interested in landing Paul. The Lakers are looking to address its point guard situation. D’Angelo Russell has been disappointed in the postseason and also is asking for a high price. Hence, the Lakers might not extend his contract.

Moreover, rumors have it that LeBron James is pushing the Lakers to trade Kyrie Irving from Mavericks. But, the front office isn’t much interested and is likely to defer his request. That leaves them with Chris Paul. Chris could prove to be a good addition. While he turned 38 this year, the PG managed to put in average numbers. Hence, all things considered, Chris Paul is the person the Lakers should be looking at to solve their point guard crisis.
