Novak Djokovic will reclaim the topmost spot of the ATP rankings on Monday. Djokovic took the World No 1 spot again after Daniil Medvedev lost the race for the quarter-finals against Gael Monfils at Indian Wells this week. Unfortunately, Novak has only played the Dubai Tennis Championship this year after being deported from Australia over the vaccination dispute.
The 34-year-old Serbia tennis star has lost a lot of crucial ranking points as he was unable to play in the Indian Wells and Miami Open. Novak has also recently revealed the schedule of the upcoming tournaments that he will be a part of. Moreover, the 26-year-old Russian star Medvevdev is hoping to reclaim the No 1 spot from Djokovic at the Miami Open next week.
Medvedev Hopes To Get No 1 Spot Back From Djokovic:
The Russian tennis giant would be competing during the Miami open next week. Hw is hoping to reclaim the top spot as Djokovic will not be a part of the competition. He is not allowed to participate due to the player vaccination guidelines in the US. If Medvedev managed to reach the semi-finals, he will reach up to the top again.
Medvedev created history by becoming the first player outside the Big Four to reach the top of the rankings since 2004. He became the sixth-oldest player to reach the No 1 position for the first time at 26 years. Roger Federer\’s coach Annacone believes that Medvedev will take back the top position during the Miami Open.
Federer\’s Coach Warns Djokovic About Medvedev:
While talking to the tennis Channel, Annacone said that he think the Russian was not comfortable playing at Indian Wells. It was tough for Medvedev as he hits the ball really flat. Federer\’s coach added, \”For Medvedev, you\’re never going to take that away.\” He believed that Medvedev will take the No 1 spot again soon. Annacone added that Novak has been around the No 1 spot for the last 30 years while Medvedev is clearly unsettled at the top spot as of now.
While Djokovic misses out on Miami Open due to covid restrictions, it will be interesting to see if Medvedev surpasses Djokovic again. If Medvedev loses before the quarter-finals, Djokovic will remain World Number 1 until he returns to the court at the Monte Carlo Masters.
Djokovic Announces His Participation In Monte Carlo Masters And Serbia Open:
The 2–time Grand Slam Champ has confirmed his participation in the Monte Carlo masters followed by the Serbia Open. France has recently lifted its vaccine rules, allowing unvaccinated players to participate and enter sports arenas. Thus, Novak will be able to contest in the French Open and the Monte Carlo Masters.
Moreover, the ATP 250 has returned to Serbia in 2021 after nine long years. Djokovic was defeated by Aslan Karatsev in the semi-finals last year. Recently, Novak has confirmed that he will be a part of the Serbia Open 2022. The Serbian tournament will begin on April 18, a week after the Monte Carlo Masters. Djokovic will play the Serbia Open in the clay-court swing at the Novak Tennis Center in his hometown Belgrade.
