The Golden State Warriors owe a lot to Klay Thompson for playing an important role in making the franchise a modern-day Dynasty. Clearly, Stephen Curry has been the central figure of the franchise ever since the Dubs Dynasty started. But Klay and Draymond Green played their roles brilliantly. The trio of Klay, Dray, and Steph was the biggest strength of the Dubs organization for the four titles in a span of eight years. Moreover, Kevin Durant helped the GSW to win a couple of titles in 2017 and 2018. However, the reason why the Dubs Dynasty was going strong was simply because of the chemistry between the trio and their head coach, Steve Kerr.
But then the 2023-2024 season saw a possible end of the dynasty. The two key players – Draymond Green and Klay Thompson equally had disappointing seasons. However, Green and Steph Curry are still under contract with the Warriors. But the one who will be an unrestricted free agent is Klay Thompson. As of now, there have been no talks of a contract extension between Klay and the Dubs, as per the latest information.
No Talks Of Contract Extension Between Klay Thompson And The Warriors
Recently, The Athletic’s Anthony Slater reported that the two parties – Warriors and impending free agent Klay Thompson have not made any “Notable movements” toward a new contract. Slater added that the calendar will flip to June next weekend. May 2024 was the final month of the ongoing contract between Klay and the Dubs. But most importantly, Slater says that there is a pretty realistic possibility that these are the fading days of a 13-year-long collaboration between the shooting guard and the Warriors. Thompson and the Dubs must make decisions on his future soon. However, according to the league sources, neither party has taken any notable step toward a resolution yet.
Klay Thompson has been part of the Dubs organization for 13 years. He has won four NBA championships with them. Moreover, he has been a five-time All-Star. On top of that, he made it to a two-time All-NBA player. Over his career, Thompson has averaged 19.6 points per game. Klay has been a franchise legend. Moreover, he should be eligible for Basketball Hall of Fame once he retires. But there have been a lot of rumors surrounding several teams showing interest in Klay Thompson. For instance, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Orlando Magic are top runners to sign the four-time champion. But the question is if the Warriors will let the shooting guard bid goodbye to them.
What If Thompson Leaves The Dubs?
Last season saw Klay Thompson struggling a lot. Notably, the shooting guard only came of 14 times off the bench. It was only the first time since his rookie season that he did that. Moreover, the veteran guard struggled with his three-point shooting percentage. It was 38.7% marking only the second time he had a below 40% shooting rate from three-point range in his career. On top of that, since 2012-2013 season, the ongoing season marked the lowest ppg for Klay with 17.9 points per game.

But he is still good defensively and can get better in the offense again. Hence, teams like the Magic and the Sixers would love to have him. Without Klay, the Warriors will have an abundance of talents, including Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jonathan Kuminga. But the truth is that the Dubs are still doubtful to win another title. Without Thompson, it will get even more difficult.
