The New York Yankees’ trade deadline addition, Jazz Chisholm Jr, revived the team’s offense as they swept the best team in baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies, in three straight games. Jazz scored four home runs in three games to script franchise history before he debuts in the Bronx this weekend.
That being said, the New York Yankees had an off day on Saturday as they traveled back to New York for the upcoming homestand. However, ahead of the home series against Toronto Blue Jays, the management announced two big roster moves in the pitching depth, with more moves likely in the pipeline as of this writing.
Yankees Activate Nick Burdi, Places Cody Poteet On 60-Day IL
The New York Yankees are set to clash with Toronto Blue Jays in a three-game series starting from Friday. Ahead of the home stand, the team announced three roster moves. RHP Ron Marinaccio has been sent back down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make space for mid-skid addition RHP Enyel De Los Santos on the active roster. Enyel was traded at the August 1 deadline and is already a part of the 40-man roster. However, his move to the active roster will likely be completed on Friday. Additionally, relief pitcher Nick Burdi was activated from IL and optioned to Triple-A. Burdi landed in IL on May 24 with a hip strain and suffered a setback in rehab. Hence, the pitcher will momentarily focus on build-up in the minor league.
On the other hand, starting pitcher Cody Poteet had been shifted to 60-day IL to make space for Burdi on the 40-man roster. Poteet suffered from a right triceps strain in mid-June. He was the only depth left in the starting rotation before Will Warren made his major league debut this week to replace Gerrit Cole, who complained of body fatigue. Moreover, Clarke Schmidt, another key rotation piece, is expected to begin a rehab assignment soon, with an imminent return on cards. Having said that, to accommodate Clarke, the Yanks might consider moving Luis Gil to the bullpen, given his inning count issue. However, the pitching coach and Gil himself are hesitant to change plans as they believe the pitcher can last until the end of the season. If Gil refuses to move, Schmidt can come out of the pen to pitch in relief for the near future.
Gerrit Cole To Return In Blue Jays Series
Meanwhile, Gerrit Cole was scratched off his last start against the Phillies, citing body fatigue. The ace, who dealt with an elbow inflammation injury earlier this year, assured the fans that his missed start wasn’t injury-related. He simply didn’t recover well enough from his previous start against the Mets and chose to avert risk.
That being said, Gerrit Cole has since played catch and is expected to throw a bullpen session on Friday. Moreover, Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake stated that Cole should be able to resume his regular starts from Sunday. However, nothing is confirmed, as a final decision boils down to the critical bullpen session.
