The New York Yankees saw Nestor Cortes carry on his good form in the latest series against the Atlanta Braves. It came as a relief because most of the starting pitchers have been struggling in the last few series, including Luis Gil and Carlos Rodon. However, Nestor’s performance was not enough to save the series against the Braves. The NY side struggled offensively more than defensively in Game 3 against the visiting side. Lately, they have been dealing with a lot of injuries. Things have been a little messy for the Bronx Bombers.

Key players like Anthony Rizzo, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gleyber Torres have all been on the Injured List lately. Even in the minor league, there has been the top prospect, Jasson Dominguez, who suffered a severe oblique strain. In 2023, injuries messed up the season for the 27-time World Champions. They would not want to repeat that in 2024. However, the Yankees seem to start losing their winning momentum as they have lost their third series in a row. But Nestor Cortes says the team is not losing hope just yet.

Clearly, the Yankees are going through a rough patch lately. But that does not mean the team will need to start panicking. At least, that’s not what Nestor Cortes thinks his teammates are doing. Despite their third consecutive series loss, the starting pitcher is optimistic about the Bronx Bomber’s attitude in their clubhouse. The attitude and resilience are what stand out for the Yankees players, feels Cortes. After the series loss against the Atlanta Braves, Nestor Cortes said in a post-game interview on YES Network that it pretty much feels the same in the clubhouse. He added, “Nobody is hanging their heads or panicking here.” On the journey to play 162 games, it has been a rough patch for the Yankees in the previous three series.

Nestor Cortes said that all they need to do right now is figure out a way to get out of it. On Sunday, the Yankees lost 3-1 to the Braves. But Cortes seemed pleased with his own performance. He said that he used the combination of cutter and fastball pretty well. However, at the top of the third, Cortes gave away a home run to Jarred Kelenic. In the post-game interview, the Yankees hurler talked about that home run, saying, “It felt like it was more on the outside.” Looking back at that homer, Nestor Cortes felt it was more up and middle but said Kelenic was able to put a good swing to it.

Nestor Cortes could maintain a pretty good record if the sluggers in his team helped him a little. The Yankees scored only a run on Sunday. In Game 3 against the Braves, Cortes pitched seven innings, gave away no walks, and had seven strikeouts. The left-handed pitcher surrendered only three earned runs. Cortes only got help from the bullpen but nothing really from the offense.

Despite his quality start, he dropped to 4-6 this season. So far, Cortes has pitched 100.2 innings in 2024 and struck out 93 times. On the list of strikeouts, he is the second leader for the Yankees. But he has pitched the most no. of innings so far for the NY side. Cortes has a 3.40 ERA and a WHIP of 1.07.
