At first, the Milwaukee Brewers had a good chance of hiring Craig Counsell owing to his Midwest roots. But the departure of Counsell has left a huge hole in the Brewer’s organization. Moreover, David Stearns also left the Brewer’s organization to become the new baseball operations president of the New York Mets. On top of that, the shortstop, Willy Adames, and the pitcher, Corbin Burnes, can move out with only a year remaining before free agency. On Monday, Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated reported that the Brewers will interview Pat Murphy for its potential new manager.

But the Brewers can also offer Murphy the job of a bench coach on the staff of Counsell. Moreover, Verducci feels the Brewers can keep developing young talents from their productive farm system. Otherwise, they might take out the public relations sting regarding the loss of the franchise’s best manager. They lost him to the Chicago Cubs, who are the rivals no less. Hence, they can go on to hire a “Name Brand” manager between Ross and Don Mattingly. Like Don, Ross has playing experience, too.

Currently, the Yankees great is 62 years of age. He spent the last season as the bench coach of the Toronto Blue Jays. However, the Blue Jays did not live up to the expectations of the fans and the management last season. Anyhow, in terms of the big market, Don Mattingly has experience in playing the role of the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He played that role from 2011 to 2015. Moreover, the Yankees great’s managerial experience does not end there.

In the small market, Don Mattingly was the manager of the Miami Marlins from 2016 to 2022. As a manager, the Yankees great reached the playoffs three times with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He went as far as the NLCS with the Dodgers. Later, he made it to the playoffs with the Marlins once, back in 2020. It was a shorter version of the season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in 2020, Don Mattingly won the Manager of the Year Award.
