Albeit the team has struggled for performance in the past couple of seasons, it is still capable of turning things around.  The Mercedes squad currently sits in fourth place on the Constructors standings. The Silver Arrows trail third-place Ferrari by 116 points. Thus, the German Marque’s hope of winning the world title is practically over. Toto Wolff has highlighted a key advantage for Mercedes in not being part of the 2024 championship battle. Despite three victories before the summer break, Mercedes is on track to finish fourth in the standings, as the team has struggled to keep pace with McLaren and Ferrari since the break. While George Russell secured a third-place finish in Azerbaijan, this was mainly due to late-race incidents involving Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez.

Moreover, the Austrian executive emphasized that Mercedes must continue pushing forward, not only to improve the current season but also to set the foundation for next year’s development. The team is focusing on the future, using the remaining races to shape the direction for their 2025 car.

Although fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship may seem discouraging, the Mercedes chief pointed out an unexpected benefit: finishing lower in the standings grants the team more wind tunnel time. This additional development time could prove valuable, especially as Mercedes looks to capitalize on the new power unit regulations coming in 2026. Wolff sees this as a silver lining, offering Mercedes a strategic advantage that could be crucial to its long-term competitiveness.

Toto Wolff Explains McLaren’s “Risky” F1 Development Turn Amid Red Bull Slump  

Toto Wolff shared insights into the fluctuating performance trends in Formula 1, noting how some teams, like McLaren, have maintained a strong upward trajectory despite making fewer car updates. He acknowledged hearing that McLaren’s last major upgrade came in Miami, yet their car has consistently improved, which he recognized as a bold but risky strategy. The concern for Wolff is that while consolidating an older package can work in the short term, they could gain a significant advantage if rivals continue to improve with fresh updates.

Wolff also addressed the impact of aerodynamic research restrictions, which may have helped teams close the gap to Red Bull faster than during Mercedes’ dominant years. He pointed out McLaren’s dramatic turnaround last season, which was surprising even to their engineers. A seemingly modest upgrade brought far greater performance gains than expected, placing McLaren in a strong position this season.

He also reflected on how Ferrari and Red Bull have seen swings in performance throughout the year. Once thought to have another dominant season, Red Bull has seen its lead shrink. Wolff emphasized that these unpredictable shifts in performance have impacted all top teams, including Mercedes, which was the quickest team before the summer break but has since struggled to match the pace of McLaren and Ferrari. Despite these challenges, he remained cautious, noting that in F1, it’s unwise to count out any team too soon.
