The high-spirited New York Yankees faced the Milwaukee Brewers for the three-game series opener on Friday. The hosts, coming off a hattrick of a series win, started out as favorites. However, the NL Central leaders proved to be a better team and trashed the Yanks to take an early lead into the series.

Luis Severino made a strong start weeks after witnessing the darkest time of his eight-year-long Yankee career. The impending free agent had recently rediscovered his best side on the mound. However, Friday night concluded on a disappointing note for the pitcher as he faced an injury scare. Is it the end of Severino in the pinstripes?

New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino called himself the worst pitcher in baseball a few weeks ago after his ERA shot up over 11. However, the pitcher promised a comeback and certainly lived up to it. He followed up on their promise by pitching two scoreless starts vs. the Nationals and Tigers. Severino, unsure of his future with the franchise after the conclusion of the 2023 season, intended to finish on a high. Moreover, in a pursuit to live up to the goal, the pitcher stepped onto the mound to start against the Brewers on Friday. To be fair, he kicked off the night on a stellar note. In four innings, Luis gave away two runs in four hits while striking out five. However, what followed thereafter has put Severino’s 2023 season in jeopardy.

Just after pitching his 70th pitch of the night, Luis Severino dropped his glove over the mound, being in visible pain. He picked up his left side, near his oblique, as the medical staff stormed into the field. After much discussion and contemplation, Severino was pulled off mid-game. Reliever Jhony Briton came out of the bullpen to replace him. Later, the Yankees issued an official statement stating, “Luis Severino left tonight’s game with a left side injury. He will undergo diagnostic testing tomorrow.” The pitcher opened up on the injury and said that he felt like somebody had shot him. It was a deep and sharp pain. On the other hand, Austin Wells, the young man behind the plate, noticed nothing wrong with the pitcher’s demeanor until he saw him whimper in pain. The next few days remain crucial for Severino.

What’s worse about the injury scare is that it has put Luis Severino’s perfect end goal in jeopardy. The pitcher, who enters free agency next off-season, is unlikely to return to the Bronx. Hence, he wants to end his eight-year-long tenure on a high. But, this alleged injury can end Luis’ season prematurely, which will mark the end of his time in the pinstripes.

Luis Severino signed an extension contract with the Yankees back in 2019 after making it to the All-Star a year before. He was looked upon as a promising talent waiting to explode. However, unfortunate injuries and inconsistency hampered his career massively. Moreover, the steep decline in the 2023 season further put a question mark on his existence in the Bronx.
