The New York Yankees had a sensational run in the month of May this year. With a 42-19 record, the Bronx Bombers are leading MLB in best win-lost record and subsequently regained supremacy in AL-East. A postseason qualification is nearly inevitable as per the present trend.

That being said, the month of May brought along a lot of positives for the New York Yankees. From Aaron Judge’s historic resurgence to Juan Soto’s clutch moments, the Yanks enjoyed a surreal offensive surge. But at the same time, on the defensive front, an underdog pitcher hit the ceiling and exceeded expectations to win big AL honors.

In May, New York Yankees rookie pitcher Luis Gil delivered an outstanding performance that caught the attention of the entire league. Coming in as a replacement for injured ace Gerrit Cole, the team’s expectations from Gil were extremely low. However, Gil turned out to be the rotation’s best thrower, beating his much more experienced colleagues. In the past month of May, Gil recorded breakout starts and managed to maintain an outstanding 0.70 ERA in 6 starts. He remained unbeaten throughout these six starts and allowed a mere 14 hits and 11 walks while striking out 44 hitters. Meanwhile, Luis Gil’s extraordinary numbers in May helped him fetch the AL Rookie of the Month award as well as the AL Pitcher of the Month accolade.

Indeed, with this achievement, Luis Gil has set a high bar for the rest of his rookie season. If he can maintain this level of performance, Gil could play a pivotal role in the Yankees’ pursuit of postseason success and beyond. As soon as the results were out, New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge took to his social media handle to celebrate Luis Gil’s epic dual victory in the American League. With this achievement, Luis Gil has set a high bar for the rest of his rookie season. Notably, Aaron Judge himself also won it big by bagging the AL Hitter of the Month award for a historic, never-seen-before-offensive month. Judge’s 20-game insane streak shattered several leagues as well as Yankees franchise records. In addition, Juan Soto also won AL Player of the Week with a .435 average, 3 home runs, and 1.500 OPS in the last 6 games.

While Gil bagged a dual awards for being the best amongst American League’s rookies and starting pitchers. On the other hand, Judge was a clear winner for AL hitter of the month for his sensational offensive surge.

That being said, it’s the first time since 2019 that two MLB teammates have won the Pitcher and hitter award in the same month. The record was last achieved by the Yankees duo of Gerrit Cole and Yuli Gurriel in July of 2019. Indeed, the Yanks are in for a special season with a postseason qualification, more or less certain.
