Is Max Verstappen Threatened By McLaren’s Team Orders To Favour Lando Norris?

Oracle Red Bull Racing

Red Bull starlet Max Verstappen started the season as an undisputable champion, with unparalleled domination. The Dutchman was excited to extend the past glory, as the squad won 21 of 22 races in 2023. However, the team soon realized this season would not be a cakewalk. First, it was Ferrari, and then McLaren; the rivals buckled up to defeat the reigning champions.

Moreover, the chasing packs have come close enough to instigate panic among the Austrian crew, especially McLaren, who is challenging both the World Titles and is on the verge of creating history. Lando Norris is within touching distance of Max Verstappen, which has been a rare occurrence lately. Thus, the Woking squad released a team order to favor the Briton. On the other hand, the Dutchman has shared his thoughts about this team strategy.

Max Verstappen Focuses On Resolving His Own Issues, ‘Not Disappointed’ With Rival Team Strategies

Outlook

Max Verstappen replied to recent media queries concerning current developments at McLaren, stating that the team ultimately determines such choices. He stated that he is not especially interested in the internal plans of other teams because he has his own difficulties to face. Moreover, Verstappen said that from Oscar Piastri’s perspective, he is closer to Lando Norris than Norris is to Verstappen. As a result, McLaren is responsible for managing its internal dynamics.

The RBR triple champion also pointed out that Norris and Piastri are not considerably distanced in the championship standings. He said Piastri, who joined as a lead driver, should not be considered a second driver. However, this was a subtle try to fire up the rebel within a young driver like Piastri. The two McLaren drivers share a great bond but are fierce on the racing track. This has helped the Woking squad to maximize its point-scoring abilities.

Further, it has placed the British team closer to the Constructors’ Cup. If the Red Bull slump continues, McLaren would soon dethrone the reigning champions. However, the strategy to favor Norris could backfire if not implemented correctly. This situation could lead to McLaren missing out on some valuable points and losing their lead to the RBR squad.

He expressed his thanks and underlined the importance of working together to win both titles, describing it as a significant accomplishment for the team.
