As a matter of fact, the New York Yankees are still active in the pitching market for reinforcement. When the team signed Marcus Stroman last week, many presumed NYY would shut down its off-season rendezvous. However, GM Brian Cashman confirmed the new club is in contact with rival teams as well as free agents.
Meanwhile, the only top-tier starter available on the market is two-time CY Young awardee Blake Snell. The pitcher earned his second NL CY Young with a 2.25 ERA season in 2023. However, the New York Yankees seem a little low on cash right now. Regardless, due to a shortage of suitors in the market, NYY is currently floated as a top landing spot for Snell.
Blake Snell Yet To Receive Offer From Any Team Besides Yankees!
Before the New York Yankees agreed to Marcus Stroman, the front office took a shot at Blake Snell. The idea of having two CY Young pitchers intrigued the club. Thus, they chose to table a $150 million offer to the defending CY Young award-winning pitcher. However, the Scott Boras client put forth an ambitious request for a $200 million deal, which left the Yanks bewildered. Not only that, multiple rumors hinted that Snell won’t settle for anything less than $280 million. Subsequently, the team pulled out from the pursuit. With the current payroll exceeding the $300 million figure, the Bombers cannot take any more risks.
However, as it stands, Blake Snell’s market has become inactive for the past few weeks. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that the New York Yankees have been the only one to offer a deal to Snell this off-season. So far, the interested teams have only enquired about the pitcher’s availability and demands. However, for Snell to reignite interest in NYY, he has to lower his ridiculous and ambitious asking price. It’s understandable that Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s staggering deal influences the NL Cy Young awardee. However, his market differs a lot from Yamamoto’s. Snell is aging, and inconsistency does not reflect well on his resume. Overall, the Bronx Bombers seem happy with the current pitching depth they possess. If they were to make an exception to land Snell, the pitcher would have to adjust and lower his exceptionally high expectations.
Yanks Almost Ruled Out In Jordan Montgomery Sweepstakes
Besides Blake Snell, reunion with Jordan Montgomery makes the most sense for the New York Yankees. However, the pitcher is not yet ready to let go of the grudge he holds against his previous organization. Moreover, now he has a proven track record of acting as a postseason pitcher. Thus, he does not intend to go back to a struggling team.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com says Jordan Montgomery’s return to the Texas Rangers is the most logical and likely conclusion to the pitcher’s free agency. A reunion with the Yankees remains a long shot. Thus, all signs point towards the Yank’s end of the off-season. It’s highly unlikely for the team to add any more reinforcements amid current market circumstances.
