The MLB mid-season trade deadline closed down on Tuesday 6.00 PM and the New York Yankees added a couple of bullpen pieces after finalising Jazz Chisholm Jr’s trade last weekend. While the front office were expected to land a significant rotation piece, a potential deal was dumped at the last minute.

Apparently, the New York Yankees were interested in Detroit Tigers ace Jack Flaherty and the negotiations had reached an extensive stage. However, just a few hours leading up to the 6.00 PM deadline, the Yankee front office had a change of heart due to the pitcher’s troubling injury history.

Jack Flaherty Goes To LA Dodgers At Yankees Back Out!

The New York Yankees were heavily linked to Detroit Tigers ace Jack Flaherty days leading up to the mid-season trade deadline. Several MLB insiders believed that negotiations had reached an advanced stage, and the Yanks had even prepared a blockbuster deal before the front office got access to the pitcher’s medical history. As per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Bronx Bombers were front runners to land Flaherty, but they backed out after reviewing his recent injury history. Jack apparently suffered from a back issue in July that required two injections in three weeks and cost him a start. While Flaherty bounced back strongly with a 1.53 ERA, 18 strikeouts, and a pair of wins in the next three starts, it wasn’t enough to change the Yanks’ stance.

Instead, the LA Dodgers won the pursuit and traded Jack Flaherty for Thayron Liranzo and Trey Sweeney. Notably, Flaherty had placed himself in AL CY Young conversation with a 7-5 record, 2.95 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 133 strikeouts across 106.2 innings. However, the injury history proved to be a deal breaker for the New York Yankees as they eventually failed to bolster the rotation depth. On top of that, ace Gerrit Cole is showing signs of wear out as he was scratched off his latest start against the Phillies, citing body fatigue. Moreover, injured Clarke Schmidt is also not expected to rejoin the rotation anytime soon, as he just started hitting bullpen sessions earlier this week. And with less than 50 games left into the season, the Bronx Bombers will need divine intervention to stay afloat in the playoff contention in a highly competitive division.

In another setback, the New York Yankees were denied Garrett Crochet by the Chicago White Sox, the team with the worst record in MLB. The White Sox apparently told Yanks that they don’t match up to the pitcher. This comes days after ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported that Crochet wanted a guarantee extension contract from a team that trades for him.

His condition was to be allowed to pitch in the postseason and not be moved to the bullpen. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees were apparently concerned about Garrett Crochet’s innings limit and his potential regression in the postseason. With that, the Bronx Bombers ran out of rotation options and ended up with just a couple of bullpen moves at the deadline.
