The New York Yankees are ruining a great start they had at the start of the ongoing season. Initially, the fans believed this team would make the World Series this year. After all, that’s how good the start was for the NY side. Moreover, they were the first team to win 50 games this season. Around mid-June, Aaron Boone’s side was 50-22. Fans in the Bronx were over the moon as they started speculating if the World Series in 2024 would be between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Bronx Bombers or between the NY side and the Atlanta Braves.

Most importantly, as the Yankees enjoyed the best record in the American League at one point, the fans were sure they were making the “Big Dance.” However, to their utter dismay, the Pinstripes had been through a steady decline since June 13. They went 6-16 in the next 22 games. Even in July, they had a poor start, with 4-8 before the Midsummer Classic. The slump continued even after the All-Star break as the Yankees went 2-4. However, in the latest Subway Series finale, there was a moment that New York’s sports fans really loved to see.

It was a dream come true moment for the young Yankees shortstop. Previously, during the 2024 Spring Training, Anthony Volpe mentioned that he would love to swap jerseys with the New York Knicks superstar shooting guard Jalen Brunson. Finally, it happened for the startling shortstop on Wednesday at the Yankee Stadium on the sidelines. On the other hand, the Mets roster took BP. Brunson and Volpe exchanged their respective No. 11 jerseys. The Yankees shared the moment on their Instagram handle. This pre-game jersey swap was a big fanboy moment for Volpe. It happened because the Knicks star was present on Wednesday night at the Yankee Stadium to see the Subway Series finale. It was a two-game series, and the Bronx Bombers were already down 0-1.

They needed to win the series finale to tie the series. But when things don’t go your way, it always gets tough to execute your plans. Nothing seems to work in the Yankees favor at the moment. They already had a pretty bad record against the city rivals this year. Before the series finale, the Mets had won the last three games against the 27-time World Champions. Hence, on Wednesday the Mets had a chance to sweep another series against the Yankees. And so they did.

It was a must-win game for the Yankees but they blew it. Gerrit Cole was on the mound as the Yankees starter. But it was one of those days that the reigning AL Cy Young winner would like to forget. Pete Alonso and co won 12-3 to claim another Subway Series win this regular season. Cole gave up six earned runs and got eight hits with only four strikeouts.

The 2023 AL Cy Young winner pitched 5.2 innings on Wednesday. Anthony Volpe had a bad day on the plate again, going hitless at five at-bats. Francisco Lindor hit a couple of home runs, as Alonso Tyrone Taylor and Mark Vientos hit one homer each. With that loss, now the Yankees are down 60-44.
