The New York Yankees, carrying the best record in major league, were humbled by defending AL-East champions Baltimore Orioles in a three-game series held recently at the Yankee Stadium. The pitching department had a nervous breakdown as starters as well as relief pitchers failed to come through.
Notably, while the New York Yankees starting rotation has been excellent without Gerrit Cole, the bullpen has developed cracks due to consistent injury issues. Hence, to curb the crippling bullpen depth, the Yanks front office have made a usual mid-season move to sign a recently released White Sox reliever.
Yankees Announce Signing Of Left-Handed Reliever Tim Hill
The New York Yankees have bolstered their bullpen for the rest of the 2024 MLB season by signing left-handed pitcher Tim Hill. Ahead of the series finale against the Baltimore Orioles, the team announced the signing and the subsequent roster move as well. Hill will replace Anthony Misiewicz on the active roster, as the latter has been optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Furthermore, to make room on the 40-man roster, the Bronx Bombers designated LHP Clayton Andrews for assignment. That being said, Tim Hill was released by the Chicago White Sox just a couple of days ago after his ERA soared to 5.87 ERA in 27 appearances. Regardless, the Yanks view him as an asset for his unique sidearm delivery. “It’s a different look from the left side, a guy that really puts the ball on the ground,” Aaron Boone said.
Notably, Tim Hill, 34, has a career 17-14 record, four saves and a 4.30 ERA in 347 career relief appearances for the Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres, and Chicago White Sox combined. Additionally, Hill’s unique pitching style and experience could be particularly useful in high-leverage situations, where matchups against left-handed hitters are crucial. Overall, the Yankees’ decision to sign Hill reflects their strategy of taking calculated risks to improve their roster.
By bringing in Hill, they are betting on his ability to rediscover his form and contribute effectively in critical moments. With the postseason approaching, every addition to the bullpen is scrutinized for potential impact, and Hill’s signing is no exception. And as the mid-season deadline is inching closer, the Bombers are expected to make a couple of more additions to the bullpen.
Aaron Boone Opens Up On Bullpen Struggles After Orioles Humiliation
The New York Yankees getting humbled by the Baltimore Orioles in the series finale held on Thursday would be an understatement. The Bombers were literally hammered left, right, and center as the Orioles took home a 17-5 giant victory. From starting pitchers to the entire force of relief pitchers, nobody was spared. Eventually, Boone sought help from catcher Jose Trevino.
That being said, Aaron Boone admitted that things with the Yankees bullpen have been rough. “It has been a little up and down for some guys, and you know, that’s gonna happen,” Boone added. However, despite the blowout, the skipper believes that a full-fledged competitive MLB season throws pitchers into wrenches. It’s tough, and it is also important for Yanks as a unit to stay together and keep their beliefs.
