The New York Yankees sent shockwaves across the league when they announced a stranger roster move on Monday, ahead of the four-game series against the Seattle Mariners. Emerging relief pitcher Ian Hamilton has been placed on a 7-day COVID-19 injured list. Hamilton’s placement on the Covid-19 injured list came after he tested positive for the virus on May 19, as specified in the team’s official announcement. Notably, the roster move shocked MLB fans and analysts alike, as the deadly virus has not been seen around the league for nearly two years after its initial breakout in 2020. The last MLB player to be listed for COVID-19 was nearly two years ago, reflecting how protocols and vaccinations had largely kept outbreaks under control within the league.

However, Ian Hamilton’s case is a stark reminder that the virus is still present and can affect athletes. That being said, Before contracting COVID-19, Hamilton had been an essential part of the Yankees’ bullpen. In 19 games, he pitched a 3.18 ERA, 1.412 WHIP, 19 strikeouts, and six holds across 22.2 innings pitched. Now, as per MLB league guidelines, any player testing positive for the virus will have to serve a minimum of seven days on IL. Additionally, the entire team will likely undergo testing to rule out any chances of a widespread outbreak. Regardless, the relief arm’s absence from the bullpen will undoubtedly impact the Yanks in the next week as they have a road trip coming in. LHP Clayton Andrews has been recalled on the active roster as immediate reinforcement for Hamilton, whereas RHP Colby White has been designated for assignment to make roster space for Andrews.

The New York Yankees let a win slip against the Seattle Mariners after holding a 4-1 lead in the ninth innings. Clay Holmes, riding on a 20-game scoreless streak, surprisingly blew up the save by leaking as many as four earned runs on four hits. His stuff was all over the place as the Mariners punished him badly.

Needless to say, the Yankee fans were extremely frustrated after the loss as the Bronx Bombers nearly had the win in their pockets. Many blamed Holmes for his horror outing, whereas a few blamed Gleyber Torres’ miscue in the field. Regardless, the four-game series is still wide open, and the Yanks have plenty of time to redeem themselves.
