Yankees, Gleyber Torres

The latest name for the New York Yankees on the Injured List has been Gleyber Torres. These injury issues have been a constant problem for the NY side. Last year, it was the worst it could get. They could not make the postseason for the first time since 2016. It is because there were just too many injuries to key players like Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo. As a result, they had a very weak offence. Juan Soto was not part of the team in 2023. Perhaps then things could have been a little bit different. However, in the ongoing season, the Yankees started the season really well.

They have been the first team in the league to win 50 games this year. Mostly for that the credit goes to the dynamic duo of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto. Even this duo has missed a few games due to injury scares. Lately, the IL of the NY side has been getting longer. Anthony Rizzo and Jasson Dominguez were already there on the Injured List. Lately, Gleyber Torres joined them with a groin injury.

According to Mark W Sanchez of the New York Post, the groin injury of Gleyber Torres proved to be serious enough as the team had to wait for testing and give him a day off. Perhaps it might not be as serious as it will concern the Yankees to miss him for a lot of games. The NY side pulled him out of Thursday’s game after five innings, owing to “Tightness in his right groin.” On Friday, Torres had an MRI exam. And as it seems the results came back clean. Moreover, Aaron Boone mentioned that he can use the slugger “Day to day.” But then he proceeded to say that he can also try to use Torres off the bench.

That can happen if the Yankees really need him to come off the bench. Moreover, the Yankees skipper mentioned that he expects Torres to be back this weekend. The day when he mentioned the slugger might be back “This weekend,” the NY side lost to the Atlanta Braves 8-1 in the Yankee Stadium. In 2024, Gleyber Torres had played the first 77 games of the Bronx Bombers. On Friday, he missed his first game in 2024. This season is crucial for Torres as he will be a free agent after the season is over.

Yankees’ Second Baseman Had Been Struggling A Lot This Season

Since Gleyber Torres is a free agent, he really needed to perform at a high level. However, he had a streaky and poor campaign so far. It even started horribly for the second baseman. At the end of April, Torres had a .550 OPS. However, during the period from May 1 to June 13, the second baseman returned to being the solid hitter he had been in the previous seasons.

From May till mid-June, Gleyber Torres had a .742 OPS with six homers. Before he sustained the groin injury, he went 1 for 17. The Yankees manager replaced Torres with Oswaldo Cabrera at second base and DJ LeMahieu at third. Eventually, Cabrera went 0 for 3 and had a couple of strikeouts.
