The New York Yankees starting rotation faced a hiccup in the spring when ace and reigning AL CY Young winner Gerrit Cole suffered from an elbow injury on his pitching arm. He was shut down for a month, and his prolonged absence from the field was just the writing on the wall.

Regardless, in his absence, the New York Yankees rotation recorded the lowest ERA in the AL and were thriving until Clarke Schmidt bagged him his forearm last week. He is off to a long layoff, and the Yanks recalled an off-season signing as an immediate replacement until Gerrit Cole recovers. But can the latest addition make a big difference?

How Cody Poteet Can Revive His Dying Career With the Yankees?

After Clark Schmidt was diagnosed with a right lat strain, Cody Poteet was recalled by Yankees from Triple-A as immediate reinforcement. While Gerrit Cole’s return is a couple of weeks away, it essentially means Poteet has two starts at tops to revive his dying MLB career. Poteet made a start against the Giants on Saturday, where he allowed 2 runs in 3 hits across innings. However, the one thing missing from Poteet’s pitching arsenal was a sweeping slider. While Cody Poteet is comfortable with the blend of four-season fastball and curve balls, sliders could prove to be a game changer. This pitch already complements his existing repertoire, which includes a fastball, changeup, and curveball.

The sweeping slider’s movement could serve as an effective out pitch, particularly when combined with his fastball to keep hitters off balance. If Poteet can master this pitch, it could lead to a significant improvement in his strikeout rates and overall effectiveness. Of course, given the shortage of time, it’s essentially difficult for Cody Poteet to adjust to new pitches this quickly.

However, with the season still long, Poteet can be called up again in the majors in case of some injuries. Hence, incorporating the slider now will have long-term benefits for Cody as he looks to revive his major league career. Moreover, under the guidance of the Yankees’ coaching staff, Poteet has the resources to refine his sweeping slider and integrate it effectively into his game plan as quickly as possible. Overall, the sweeping slider symbolizes a fresh start and a chance to redefine his career for Poteet.

Clarke Schmidt Shares The Pain Of ‘Devastating’ Injury

Just when the New York Yankees were cruising through with the best win-loss record in the league, an unexpected injury setback hit them out of nowhere. Thriving starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt has picked up a right lat strain and has been shut down from all throwing activities for the next four weeks, to say the least.

“It’s definitely devastating,” Schmidt said. The starting pitcher added that he was having one of the best seasons of his career and thoroughly enjoyed the game as well as the process from within. Schmidt also reflected on how the injury caught him off guard, as his body was fine until last week. The Yankees have yet to determine a return timeline.
