The New York Yankees hitting lineup had an absolute field day on Friday in the series opener against the San Diego Padres. Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres homered in the same game as Yanks trashed Padres with a dominant 8-0 scoreline.
However, New York Yankees euphoria was short lived. As the visitors were marching on towards a overpowering win, an injury scare involving third baseman Jon Berti and relief pitcher Nick Burdi rocked the Yankee cap as the duo had just returned from injury list a few days ago.
Yankees Jon Berti Helped Off The Field As He Slips In Batters’ Box
The New York Yankees have been dealt a significant blow as two of their key players, Jon Berti and Nick Burdi, have picked up fresh injuries. During the ninth innings, Yankee third baseman Jon Berti was out off the deck to the batters box. Berti grounded a hit and before he could sprint to the first base, the infielder slipped right outside the batters’ box. He was down with immense pain as medical team rushed into the middle. Jon Berti couldn’t walk properly as he had to be lifted off the field with help from 2-3 Yankee personnels. The third baseman exited the game and didn’t return for the rest of the night as Yanks secured an impressive 8-0 win over the Padres.
That being said, elaborating on the injury, Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Jon Berti injured his calf and is likely headed to injury list. Notably, Berti had just been reinstated from the lineup a few days ago as he recovered from a hamstring injury. As far as reinforcements are concerned, the Yanks still remain undecided. Boone said the team won’t rush DJ LeMahieu back into the lineup. He finished his rehab assignment from a foot injury that he sustained way back in spring. While DJ was expected to be reinstated on this West Coast trip, the roster move is getting delayed for undisclosed reasons. For now, utility player Oswaldo Cabrera seems the most probable candidate to replace Jon Berti at third base. He had already been splitting time with Berti in DJ’s absence. But now, Cabrera is expected to embrace a full-time starting role.
Nick Burdi’s Hip Injury Flares Up Days After IL Return
New York Yankees relief pitcher went down with hip injury that forced him to miss a whole month of time this season. He had 1.86 ERA through 12 games before the hip issues troubled his stay in the majors. Regardless, after weeks of rehab, Burdi was reinstated from the 10-day injury list on May 10 and pitched in five games.
However, before his stint with the Yankees could take off, Nick Burdi’s hip inflammation injury has flared up. He is sent back on 15-day IL on Friday with the same issue. Right-hander Yoendrys Gomez has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as immediate replacement. Notably, Gomez has been started this year in Triple-A with 72 pitches thrown across four innings.
