Gleyber Torres, after being left off the trade hook multiple times, utilized the 2023 season to make a statement. The 26-year-old ended the season as the New York Yankees second second-best offensive player, second to captain Aaron Judge. In a rather appalling season, Torres rose from the ashes to revive his chances of a potential extension contract.

However, the Yankees, staring at a logjam in the infield, might not come to Gleyber Torres’ rescue. There is a realistic possibility that Torres could be used as a trade chip despite promising performance this year. Amid speculations, a renowned Yankee insider pitched a bold trade involving Torres, which might not make much sense for Hal Steinbrenner to take the plunge.

Yankee Insider Links Gleyber Torres To Mariners In Unreasonable Trade Deal

Gleyber Torres, Matt Brash

Gleyber Torres will more or less face uncertainty as the New York Yankees mull roster overhaul in the aftermath of a lost season. His extension contract will end in 2024, and he will seemingly remain available for arbitration. However, as per popular belief, the Bronx Bombers seem most likely to put Torres up for trade to free up some space in the infield. The second baseman, who had a 25-homer season, will be shown the exit doors. Apparently, the Yanks plan to use Torres as a trade chip to fetch a lucrative deal. His current form has undoubtedly upped his stakes in the market, which the Bombers will look to exploit.

Having said that, Yankee insider Joel Sherman recently proposed a trade involving the infielder, which seems a loss-making deal. Sherman linked Gleyber Torres to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for reliever Matt Brash. The right-hander finished the season with a 3.06 ERA in 78 games. Brash is young and is capable of filling up Michael King’s place as the latter looks set to seal up a rotation spot for 2024. However, trading a hot performer like Torres for a reliever does not make sense for the Yankees at all. They already have a strong bullpen, with many throwers still budding in the minor league system. All the team needs is an outfielder, possibly a left-handed hitter. Thus, this deal seems highly unlikely to come through. Steinbrenner would exercise caution before signing off any trade or free agency deal this coming off-season.

Yankees Pursuit Of Japanese Ace In Jeopardy

Last month, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and his team were captured scouting Japanese ace pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The pitcher pitched a no-hitter game that evening as Cashman, besides many other rival representatives, witnessed Yamamoto’s brilliance up close. Moreover, rumors stated that Yanks, as a team, are heavily invested in the ace and are mulling to go all in during free agency.

However, the Yankees’ dream pursuit run will likely be halted by city rivals, the New York Mets. As per the latest rumors, the Mets will likely remain the highest bidders for Yoshinobu Yamamoto. “Every big-market team has been tracking the two-time MVP. But a couple of rival GMs say they hear the Mets are expected to go big,” said Jon Heyman of the New York Post. It would be an interesting battle as both city rivals want to rebuild after a lost season.
