The New York Yankees want this offseason to go perfectly as planned. They are looking to make significant changes to their personnel ahead of the next season. Moreover, the Bronx Bombers have disappointed the fans in the last few years. In fact, it has been a long time since the NY side saw themselves in the World Series. But to things get even worse, the Pinstripe team had to watch the playoffs from the sidelines. In 2023, they even failed to make the postseason. The last time they missed the postseason was back in 2016.
This terrible record last season was a wake-up call for the team in the current free agency. Clearly, the team realized they didn’t have enough firepower. Hence, the captain generally feels a lot more pressure. Now, the question is, who are the top superstar free agents the Yankees are looking for? The General Manager made it very clear during the GM Meetings in Arizona last month. Brian Cashman said that they are in the market to look for two lefty outfielders and reinforce their department of pitching.
Top Free Agents On The Yankees Shopping List
Since the Yankees are looking for a superstar who can play alongside Aaron Judge, then who’s better than Juan Soto? But if the San Diego Padres ask for a price that is too hefty for Soto, then there’s always Cody Bellinger. On the other hand, the Yankees really want to land Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Brian Cashman sounded pretty positive about the Winter Meetings when he said the team is knocking on doors and having conversations. Moreover, the GM appreciates all the help they get from the owner, Hal Steinbrenner. In this offseason, the Yankees look to use the situation of the Padres as the San Diego team is in need to slash payroll.
It is one of those rare moments when the game’s best hitter is available before becoming a free agent. Hence, the Bronx Bombers really want to land Soto. But Cody Bellinger is more of a Yankee material as his father, Clay was a member of the legendary 90’s Yankees dynasty. Anyway, both Soto and Bellinger are quality lefty hitters, and they’ll be useful in the left and center field for the NY side. On the other hand, Yamamoto is a Japanese sensation and the second biggest name after Shohei Ohtani, currently available in the international free agency market. Moreover, Yamamoto can always bolster the bullpen of any team he’s part of.
Is There No Chance For The Bronx To Land The Two-Way Superstar?
The Yankees need another superstar alongside Aaron Judge. Hence, they have been looking at all the superstar free agents available at present. Needless to say, the biggest name is Shohei Ohtani currently available in the market. But the NY side is far from the top two teams who are in line to acquire the “Sho-Time.” The Los Angeles Dodgers have the best chance, but the Toronto Blue Jays are making a lot of noise to steal Shohei from LA.
However, Ohtani may also consider the current champions, the Texas Rangers. Anyway, the Chicago Cubs are also a top contender to land him. On the other hand, the Yankees also showed interest, but they are a long shot to land the unicorn. Hence, the NY side is waiting to see where Shohei Ohtani decides to head. After that, the Bronx Bombers can start shopping in the free agency market.
