With days leading up to the playoffs, the New York Yankees were jolted by Anthony Rizzo’s injury. He was hit by a pitch for the nth time in his career. While Rizzo, on most days, ends up weathering the storm, he fractured as many as two fingers on this fateful occasion.

Anthony Rizzo’s 15-day IL decision left a huge void at first base for the New York Yankees. While prospect Ben Rice was recalled to the big league roster, he was held up due to his inexperience as Oswaldo Cabrera played first base in Game 1 of ALDS. However, for Game 2, the Yanks fielded a fresh face.

In the New York Yankees’ 4-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals in Game 2 of the ALDS, one unexpected bright spot was Jon Berti, who made his first career start at first base. With Anthony Rizzo sidelined due to fractured fingers, the Yanks have had to get creative at the position. Moreover, after trying Oswaldo Cabrera in Game 1, manager Aaron Boone turned to Berti for Game 2, despite Berti having never played first base in a professional game. However, to everyone’s surprise, Berti’s athleticism and adaptability paid off. He made key defensive plays, including a heads-up play that helped catch Maikel Garcia in a rundown.

Later in the sixth inning, with runners on the corners and the New York Yankees trailing, Jon Berti made a pivotal double play. “I’m doing the best I can to learn and be an athlete. I don’t expect it to be perfect,” Berti said. Offensively, Berti contributed as well, keeping the Bombers’ hopes alive in the bottom of the ninth with a single to right field. Although his impact wasn’t enough to turn the tide in his team’s favor, his strong performance was a highlight in an otherwise disappointing game. Meanwhile, skipper Aaron Boone has not yet committed to a full-time first baseman for the remainder of the series. He hinted that rookie Ben Rice, who played significant time at first during the summer, might see some action. Notably, for Game 3, the Yanks will fly to Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium.

Nestor Cortes Plays Catch With No Timeline In Sight

New York Yankees starter Nestor Cortes, recovering from a left elbow flexor strain, has started playing catch for the second consecutive day, a sign of progress in his rehabilitation. However, the Yanks remain cautious about his potential return during the postseason. Cortes, who has dealt with injuries throughout the 2024 season, is working hard to rejoin the team.

However, there are no guarantees he will be available for the playoffs. The left-hander was a crucial part of the Yankees’ rotation before the injury and would be a valuable addition to the pitching staff if he can recover in time. However, his timeline is uncertain. While playing catch is a positive step, Cortes will need to continue improving to be considered for a postseason return.
