The New York Yankees face a pivotal offseason as they look to address their glaring issue at first base. Following Anthony Rizzo’s struggles with post-concussion syndrome and subpar performances from various substitutes, the position has become a significant weak link.

With a historically low OPS of .602 since May 2023, the Yankees are exploring multiple options, including marquee free agents, potential trades, and internal solutions, to shore up their infield and bolster their offensive lineup. Hence, in the upcoming free agency, the first base problem is something the front office will have to address.

The first base position has been a surprising Achilles’ heel for the Yankees. After Rizzo’s May 2023 collision with Fernando Tatis Jr., the position saw a revolving door of players like DJ LeMahieu, Ben Rice, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Jake Bauers, none of whom managed to claim the role. The decline in production has left the Yankees in search of a reliable and impactful solution. Among free agents, Pete Alonso stands out. The Mets slugger, with 226 career home runs, offers proven power and durability. However, Alonso is coming off his least productive season (.788 OPS) and might demand a hefty contract. Christian Walker, a defensive standout with three consecutive Gold Gloves, could be an underrated choice. His .813 OPS over three seasons make him a strong contender, though concerns about his age persist.

Veterans like Carlos Santana and Paul Goldschmidt bring experience and pedigree but raise questions about longevity. Santana, at 39, still offers a switch-hitting bat and Gold Glove defense, while Goldschmidt, despite his 2022 MVP title, is 37 and coming off his worst season. The New York Yankees could also turn to trades, targeting players like LaMonte Wade Jr. of the Giants. The lefty offers strong on-base skills (.376 OBP over two seasons) and could fill the leadoff spot. Nathaniel Lowe, a solid performer with the Rangers, and Josh Naylor of the Guardians are also intriguing options. Naylor, despite a history of sparking rivalries with the Yankees, had a career-best 31 homers last season. Yandy Diaz, a corner infielder for the Rays, offers another possibility. Though his recent performance dipped (.755 OPS in 2024), his track record of receiving MVP votes underscores his potential value.

The New York Yankees may also look within their organization. Ben Rice, with his disciplined approach and promise, is a candidate for extended opportunities. DJ LeMahieu, a veteran presence, remains under contract but is not a long-term solution. Oswaldo Cabrera showed promise toward the end of 2024 and could earn consideration with further development.

That being said, the Yankees’ decisions at first base hinge on broader offseason moves, particularly their pursuit of Juan Soto. Should they land Soto, the financial flexibility for a big-name first baseman may diminish, pushing the team toward more cost-effective options or internal promotions. Hence, with the 2025 season approaching, resolving their struggles at first base is critical for the Yankees to strengthen their lineup.
