The Golden State Warriors can’t think of trading Stephen Curry at this point. After all, the three-point King led the franchise to become a modern-day Dynasty. Along with Steph, there have been two other guys who have won four championships for the Dubs in eight years – Draymond Green and Klay Thompson. Even after elimination this year, the Dub’s talismanic leader said, “I can’t imagine playing without those guys.” However, both Dray and Klay had horrible seasons this year. In fact, it was the two back-to-back suspensions of Green early in the season that messed up the start for the Warriors in the ongoing season.
Later, the Splash Brothers struggled with consistency. Moreover, in the game against the Sacramento Kings at the play-in stage, Klay Thompson had a scoreless night. That was really disappointing for the Dub Nation. Eventually, the Kings knocked them out of the competition. Now, in the offseason, Klay is going to be an unrestricted free agent. Will the Warriors trade Thompson? Dray and Steph still have contracts with the franchise. But what about their breakout star, Jonathan Kuminga?
Warriors Unlikely To Trade Jonathan Kuminga
After the shocking elimination in the 2023-24 postseason, the Warriors are desperate to bring significant changes to their roster. But it seems like they are not willing to trade two stars of their roster, no matter what. First of all, the Dubs are not ready to part ways with Stephen Curry. Secondly, they have the breakout star Jonathan Kuminga of the 2023-24 season. JK had been waiting for the opportunity to play for longer minutes in his previous two seasons with the Warriors. But the head coach, Steve Kerr, gave him that opportunity in the 2023-24 season. Kuminga made full use of that opportunity. Recently, Ramona Shelburne of ESPN said the Warriors are “Not at all” thinking about trading their breakout star. On 95.7 FM’s Willard and Dibs of The Game, Ramona mentioned that things are about to get complicated because of JK’s contract extension talks.
Then, the Dubs must also think about how much money they have. Nonetheless, Shelburne feels that Warriors will do everything they can to keep JK. Moreover, the ESPN reporter added that the GSW franchise might not even want to talk about him. Jonathan Kuminga is moving toward the final year of his contract that he signed as a rookie. Next season, he should make $7.6 million. Moreover, JK will be eligible to extend his contract right when the 2024-25 league year starts. He has time for that until the beginning of the next regular season.
This Offseason Will Get Tricky For GSW
There is a good chance that the Warriors will offer Kuminga contract extensions. But the offseason is about to get a bit tricky for the seven-time champions. For the first time in his career, Klay Thompson will be a free agent. He didn’t have a great season, neither did his team due to his off form. Then, the Dubs franchise will also have to deal with Chris Paul’s contract situation. Before June 28, they have to decide what to do with the non-guaranteed $30 million deal of Paul.
Perhaps the Warriors will sort these things out first and then move to JK. Moreover, the GSW will try to duck under the prohibitive second tax apron of the NBA. Anyway, Kuminga will look for signing his first big contract. But if his asking price is too high for the Dubs, then they might think about trading him.
