Anthony Volpe’s journey to the brink of major league success has been marked by dedication, hard work, and a relentless pursuit of improvement. In his rookie year with New York Yankees, Volpe finished with a .209 average and .666 OPS. While his offense was unsatisfactory, Volpe walked out with a golden glove for shortstop.
Indeed, Anthony Volpe lived up to the hype to a certain extent. But ahead of the sophomore season, expectations will only soar from the kid. He has a point to prove why he deserves to be the team’s permanent shortstop for many years to come. Meanwhile, Volpe’s recent spring performance reflects key mechanical adjustments that are likely to help in the long run.
Anthony Volpe Corrects Swing Ahead Of Sophomore Year With Yankees
As the New York Yankees look ahead to the upcoming MLB season, all eyes are on young prospect Anthony Volpe. The highly-touted infielder is gearing up for a breakout year, fueled by a key adjustment that could take his game to the next level. In his recent spring training appearance, Volpe hit a 105.2 MPH liner through the center field gap to secure a double. Interestingly, the kid’s bat swing seemed different and unusual compared to his rookie year. Volpe has gone much flatter against right-handers. This adjustment will likely help him play more away from the body and gain more control over hits. It’s still unknown how Volpe came up with the alleged adjustment.
Nonetheless, the kid’s intent and desire to improve his game is a major encouraging sign for the New York Yankees. Anthony Volpe’s passion for the game sees no bounds. He made it to the opening-day lineup unexpectedly last year and had a decent season. While the expectations remain high, Volpe understands the pressure of playing in New York, having been raised in the neighborhood. Earlier this off-season, Volpe stated how he intends to put his rookie year learning to good use and improve his game. The shortstop lives up to that word and is expected to bounce back with a new game plan altogether in 2024. That being said, the timing of Volpe’s breakout year couldn’t be more perfect for the Yanks as they intend to bounce back after an abysmal 82-80 record 2023 season.
Jose Trevino, Oswald Peraza To Return After Injury Scares
On the first week of spring training, the Yankees lost Jose Trevino to a calf strain injury. He was expected to miss the first half of spring. But luckily, the catcher’s injury is not as serious as previously presumed. Trevino has started mild practice, and if things go well, he is expected to catch in the Yank’s home game against the Blue Jays on Wednesday.
On the other hand, Oswald Peraza missed some time with shoulder tightness. Luckily, his injury as well is not assumed to be serious. And Aaron Boone hinted at his return this week around Tuesday. “I don’t think it’s anything too extreme. But he’s probably not where he needs to be getting it across the diamond,” Boone said.
