Jazz Chisholm Jr’s blockbuster move over the past weekend added a much-needed spark to the struggling New York Yankees roster. He smoked two home runs in his second game as a Yankee and steered the team to a 14-4 victory against the Phillies. However, the deadline is still hours away.
Hence, the New York Yankees front office still holds some leverage to make another splashing move at the August 1 deadline. While infield need have been addressed, bullpen and starting rotation desperately needs an upgrade. Despite high asking price, the Bombers are required to take the leap of faith for championship aspirations.
Can Yankees Land A Starting Pitcher At Trade Deadline?
The New York Yankees’ starting rotation has faced several challenges this season. Key pitchers, including Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt, have spent considerable time on the injured list, disrupting the team’s stability and depth. Additionally, Gerrit Cole, while performing admirably post-return, cannot carry the entire burden alone. The inconsistencies from other starters have further aggravated the need for reinforcements. However, the trade market remains highly inflated. With less than 48 hours left, the Yankee front office enquired about Blake Snell, Jack Flaherty, Tarik Skubal, and Garrett Crochet. However, the Giants aren’t ready to pay Snell’s $30 million 2025 player option. On the other hand, Flaherty and Tarik are far-fetched choices, especially with the playoff race heating up.
Meanwhile, Garrett Crochet’s trade would prove to be expensive. Hence, the options are fairly limited. Regardless, despite the high cost, the New York Yankees must make a move to strengthen their rotation. The American League East is highly competitive, and having a robust starting rotation is crucial for success in both the regular season and playoffs. The Yanks’ offense, while potent, cannot compensate for a shaky rotation in the postseason, where pitching often determines outcomes. Also, the Orioles and Red Sox pulled off pitching upgrades, which will make them stronger compared to the Yanks. Hence, the Yanks’ need for a major rotation move at the trade deadline is clear. The high prices for top-tier pitchers reflect their value and the impact they can have on a team’s fortunes. For the Bronx Bombers, investing in a high-caliber starter is not just a luxury but a necessity at his point.
Nestor Cortes To Be Used At Trade Chip At Deadline!
In a startling update, Jon Heyman of NY Post claimed that New York Yankees are mulling to use starting pitcher Nestor Cortes as valuable trade chip to trade for either utility player Tommy Edman or starting pitcher Jack Flaherty. Crotes, initially drafted by Yanks, played for Orioles and Mariners before returning to Bronx in 2021.
However, the pitcher has been highly inconsistent for the past couple of years. And given the New York Yankees pressing needs at starting rotation, Nestor Cortes as emerged as a valuable trade chip. However, Cortes will only be sacrificed if the Yanks fetch a notable and experienced name in return.
