Nestor Cortes has been part of the New York Yankees for a long time. They first drafted him back in 2013. Since then, the ace has already played over seven seasons. However, he has not been part of the Pinstripes at one go all these years. He had three different stints with the 27-time World Champions. Other than the Bronx Bombers, the starting pitcher has played for the Baltimore Orioles & the Seattle Mariners for a season each. But then his third stint with the Pinstripes began in 2021. Since then, he has been an integral part of the team. However, Nestor Cortes has come up for trade discussions a number of times.
Lately, the Yankees are planning to make solid roster moves ahead of the July 30 MLB Trade Deadline. Will the NY side trade one of their starting pitchers, like Cortes? But they need to bolster their pitching department if they want to go deep into this year’s playoffs. Since June 13, the team has been going downhill. Their starting pitchers have been very inconsistent. What kind of changes will the Bombers make ahead of the deadline?
Cortes Is Sure To Stay With The Yankees
Recently, in an interview with Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, Nestor Cortes said that he is quite confident about the team wanting to keep him there. But he also knows that the Yankees will be looking to improve in other areas. Anyway, the starting pitcher noted that he is just playing it day by day, hour by hour, and minute by minute. Moreover, Cortes added that he wants to stay a part of this franchise. After all, the hurler says, “It is a winning team.” On top of that, the starter is ever grateful to the iconic franchise for drafting him back in 2013, which led him to many opportunities in his future.
Nestor Cortes believes he has had his fair share of good days and bad days wearing the Pinstripe uniform. But the hurler mentioned that the goal is to keep trying and fighting to “Claw my way up to be a proven starting pitcher.” Most importantly, Cortes wants to help the Yankees win more and more games. These comments on the Bronx Bombers came after there were several reports suggesting Cortes is a player available for trade ahead of the deadline. But now, what will the Yankees do about their starters? Only time will tell.
Teams Previously Linked To The Southpaw
Previously, this week, St. Louis Cardinals seemed like a potential suitor of Nestor Cortes. The Yankees could trade for the utilityman of the Cardinals, Tommy Edman. But on Monday, the Cardinals traded Edmon to the Los Angeles Dodgers. As a result, the speculations regarding Cortes heading to the Cardinals came to an end.
Besides St. Louis side, there has been the Detroit Tigers, who have been another franchise that showed interest in the Yankees starter. The NY side could trade for Jack Flaherty, the Tigers starting pitcher. Then, Flaherty could swap sides with Cortes. But Kirschner of The Athletic reported, “Nothing has been imminent on that front,” as per a team source.
