Juan Soto, the New York Yankees new-age sensation, had a career best season in his very first year with the Bombers. The city lights of New York surprisingly suited him as his partnership with Aaron Judge brought glory to the franchise as they march on put end to World Series drought.

Meanwhile, Juan Soto has transitioned his regular season form into October as well as he hit two home runs so far. However, while Soto is largely popular for his offensive prowess, his defensive glove this year has placed him an elite list of MLB players in the outfield category.

Juan Soto Named Finalist For Golden Glove

The New York Yankees have three finalists for the 2024 AL Gold Glove awards: Anthony Volpe, Alex Verdugo, and Juan Soto. While Volpe and Verdugo’s defensive skills were expected to receive recognition, Soto’s inclusion was surprising to many, given that he’s more known for his offensive prowess. Soto’s defensive metrics, such as minus-four Outs Above Average and minus-one Defensive Runs Saved, don’t paint him as an elite right fielder. However, his nine assists tied for the most in MLB by a right fielder in 2024. Meanwhile, Yankee manager Aaron Boone wasn’t surprised by Soto’s nomination, noting that while Soto did struggle with some plays, he’s made important contributions defensively and put in the effort to improve.

Moreover, Aaron Boone also praised Volpe, who is a finalist for the second consecutive year, and Verdugo, both of whom have been key defensive assets for the New York Yankees. He also highlighted Soto’s commitment to refining his skills and his ability to rack up assists, which has contributed to his recognition as a Gold Glove finalist. Boone said, “He’s made a lot of plays out there too,” acknowledging Soto’s effort to become a more complete player. Notably, Juan Soto is a finalist alongside Wilyer Abreu (Red Sox) and Jo Adell (Angels) in right field. Verdugo’s left-field competition includes Colton Cowser (Orioles) and Steven Kwan (Guardians), while Volpe faces Bobby Witt Jr. (Royals) and Brayan Rocchio (Guardians) in the shortstop category. Boone emphasized how deserving these Yankees players are of the recognition, given their dedication, commitment to excellence on the field and and pride in their defensive work throughout the season.

Luke Weaver Receives High Praise From Analyst

Yankees Twitter

Former All-Star pitcher and MLB analyst, Seth Plesac, has stirred conversation by declaring Luke Weaver the most valuable player on the New York Yankees, despite the presence of big names like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Juan Soto, and Alex Verdugo. Plesac acknowledged the skepticism that might arise from this statement, especially given the star-studded lineup.

However, he pointed Luke Weaver’s significant impact on the team’s bullpen. Plesac pointed out that just a few weeks ago, the Yankees’ bullpen was underperforming, particularly highlighting Clay Holmes, whose struggles were drawing criticism. However, since Weaver’s arrival, he has reportedly transformed the bullpen’s effectiveness, providing stability and allowing other pitchers, including Holmes, to regain their form.
