The Red Bull team is facing a second driver crisis, as Sergio Perez has been in a consistent slump. Despite numerous opportunities, the Mexican racer is yet to showcase his true potential. His last podium finish was in the Chinese GP back in April.

Since then, the 34-year-old racer has been on a downward spiral, dragging the Milton Keynes-based outfit with him. Therefore, talks of replacing Checo have been echoing across the RBR camp. Red Bull management hinted that a young academy driver might take over. However, Helmut Marko speculated an unexpected entry to the Austrian team.

Oscar Piastri, currently driving for McLaren, has once again sparked rumors in the F1 driver market, similar to his high-profile switch from Alpine. Initially selected to replace Fernando Alonso at Alpine for 2023, Piastri surprised the F1 world by rejecting that opportunity in favor of McLaren. This move ultimately required confirmation by Formula 1’s Contract Recognition Board. With speculation rising over Sergio Perez’s future at Red Bull, some sources suggest that Piastri could join the team as early as 2026, either as Max Verstappen’s teammate or as a possible replacement.

Piastri’s career moves are largely guided by former F1 driver Mark Webber, a fellow Australian who raced with Red Bull from 2007 to 2013. Reports indicate that Webber is eager to explore discussions with Red Bull, given his history with the team and strong ties with Piastri. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko hinted that Webber had shown significant interest in opening lines of communication about a potential move. With Verstappen’s contract at Red Bull lasting through 2028 yet containing an exit clause tied to performance, the team is mindful of securing talent for the future, especially if Verstappen were to consider other opportunities with teams like Mercedes or Aston Martin.

Six-time F1 race winner Ralf Schumacher has also weighed in, suggesting that Piastri would be an ideal candidate to step into Verstappen’s shoes if necessary. Schumacher praised Piastri’s skill, toughness, and potential for growth, noting that any current gap between Piastri and his teammate Lando Norris would likely diminish as he gains more experience. Red Bull, Schumacher added, may need to make contingency plans for 2026 if Verstappen chooses to explore new options, positioning Piastri as a strong future asset. This scenario leaves McLaren with the challenge of managing Piastri’s future, as his current contract extends until the end of 2026, potentially putting them in a strategic dilemma regarding his long-term commitment.

Oscar Piastri has firmly dismissed any rumors regarding a potential move to Red Bull, emphasizing his contentment with his current position at McLaren. He stated that he is very happy where he is and is under contract for the next two years, indicating that he has no intentions of exploring opportunities elsewhere.

Piastri acknowledged that speculation linking him to Red Bull is not surprising but considered it a compliment. He mentioned that Red Bull has a large pool of talented drivers, further reinforcing his commitment to McLaren. This declaration underscores his focus on his current team and his confidence in his role at McLaren despite the ongoing discussions and rumors surrounding his future in Formula 1.
