The oldest player in the New York Yankees is DJ LeMahieu at present. He has not been having the best season of his career by no means. It is tough to maintain consistency when players are unable to keep up with their age. But DJ has to deal with the fact that he has been a two-time batting champion once upon a time. However, the two-time batting champion has been hitting below .200 this year. Albeit, his team has been enjoying a pretty good season, this year has not been kind to the oldest active Yankee.
But he believes he can win more games for his team as long as he keeps getting the chance to be in the batting order. During spring training this year, DJ LeMahieu suffered a severe fracture in his right toe. That’s why he was not available for the Yankees rotation from the very beginning of the 2024 regular season. But since the veteran infielder returned to the lineup, he has been struggling with his form and performance. However, lately, DJ slugged a home run to help the Yankees win against the Philadelphia Phillies.
DJ LeMahieu Says He Plans To Leave No Stone Unturned
Recently, in an interview with NJ Advance Media, the veteran infielder mentioned that he is not leaving any stone unturned. He is waiting to feel good when he is there on the field. The oldest active Yankee still hopes to win more games for the team. Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media says that DJ hates to talk about himself either when he is killing it or even when he is killing the team. LeMahieu is all about wanting to win games for the team. On Wednesday, the fallen star had an awakening game, which was clearly the best of him in his current dismal season. Actually, DJ gave Juan Soto and Aaron Judge a day off as he drove in a grand slam with all six runs and a double.
Eventually, the Yankees won 6-5 against the Phillies, completing a three-game series sweep. Clearly, the NY side again looks to be surging with a 5-1 road trip from Boston to Philadelphia and then back home. LeMahieu credits his teammates for always having his back and supporting him. He said it felt good to see how excited everyone on the team was. DJ LeMahieu added, “There was a good feeling in the end of the game.” But the veteran infielder can’t deny the fact that he is not the same player he used to be.
The Veteran Infielder Talks About The Boos At The Yankee Stadium
DJ LeMahieu was once a fan favorite at the Yankee Stadium. But in a recent stretch, the Yankees were 6-16 in June, later, they were 4-8 in July, and the infielder had a dip in performance. For a few games in a row, DJ faced a lot of strikeouts. That turned the crowd against him. He told Randy Miller that he heard the boos. NJ Advance Media quoted him, saying, “I feel their frustration because I’m pretty hard on myself, too.”
But he doesn’t want to read too much into it as he just wants to win. Now, the Yankees are doing pretty well. But when the team wasn’t winning many games, and DJ wasn’t helping, “Then, I get the boos.” Anyway, he said that mentally he feels good and competitive in the box. But DJ LeMahieu is in search of the consistency that he used to have.
