The New York Yankees have been an iconic team in North American sports for years. They are the most successful franchise in the Major League Baseball. Moreover, several legends have played for the club over the years. For instance, Babe Ruth, Micky Mantle, Derek Jeter, and Alex Rodriguez have helped the team win several World Series over the years. These legends are all the more reason for the team gaining so much popularity worldwide. However, this iconic franchise has not won a World Series since 2009. Moreover, last year saw the team go through one of the worst seasons in their history.
Specifically, the Yankees finished fourth in the American League East division with an awful 82-80 record. They are looking for redemption in 2024. Moreover, the front office made significant changes that made their outfield and offense much stronger than last year. Only if the team can reduce their injury issues this season can they very well go on to win the World Series for the 28th time. But prior to their Opening Day 2024, the Yankees will play a series in Mexico. After 56 years, the NY side will play a series in Mexico. It will be a “Dream Series” for the Diablos Rojos.
Yankees And Diablos Rojos Get Ready For A “Dream Series”
Previously, in April 2023, the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padres played a game at Alfredo Harp Helu Stadium. This ballpark is the home for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico. MLB has been trying hard to have more international games in that ballpark. But this time, it is going to be a lot different and more special for the fans in Mexico. After all, it is the Yankees who’ll play in the ballpark after 56 years since Mickey Mantle wore the pinstripes uniform. Speaking to ESPN, the MLB Mexico director, Rodrigo Fernandez, mentioned the whole world loves watching the Yankees with the most fans. They always had the wish to bring the NY side to Mexico. Later, Rodrigo said the opportunity just presented itself.
Moreover, the CEO and the president of Diablos Rojos, Othon Diaz, said the games between the Padres and the Giants were “The architects behind all this.” Moreover, Diaz said without those games, the Yankees coming to Mexico again would not have been possible. But most of all, Diaz wants to thank the Yankee’s senior advisor to baseball operations, Omar Minaya. The Diablos organization loves Minaya. Moreover, Diaz says the project got off the ground when Minaya joined the Yankees from the NY Mets.
Diablos Rojos Have A Long History With The NY Side
Othon Diaz mentioned the story goes back to 56 years ago when Mickey Mantle played his final season with the Bronx Bombers. Moreover, the Yankees came to Mexico to play a couple of exhibition games. The Diablos Rojos beat the NY side in the first game of that friendly series. Diaz says that’s where it all started.
They got the opportunity, and beating the Yankees really boosted their legacy. After all, Diaz noted that the Bronx Bombers are “The baseball team” who don’t only belong to baseball. Aaron Boone, the Yankees manager, told ESPN that he hopes the team will have a cool experience for baseball and life in Mexico.
