With their season teetering on the edge of collapse, the New York Yankees find themselves in an almost impossible position. Down 3-0 in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yanks need a comeback as epic as that of the 2004 Boston Red Sox, a feat no team has replicated since.

After Monday’s 4-2 loss at Yankee Stadium, players and fans alike are grappling with the same question: is there any way out? While four games are still left in the seven-game World Series, Game 4 will be a must-win for the New York Yankees to avoid getting swept. And to avoid shame, the Yanks must pick a leaf off Red Sox’s books.

The New York Yankees are in a 0-3 deficit in the 2024 World Series after a Game 3 loss on Monday against the LA Dodgers. Manager Aaron Boone, looking to inject some life into the lineup, decided to stick with Aaron Judge in the 3-hole despite his struggles while giving Jose Trevino a start behind the plate in an attempt to revitalize his roster. But, the team’s hopes hinge on more than lineup tweaks. They need someone to emerge as their Big Papi, a postseason hero capable of lifting the team when all hope seems lost. Judge has gone cold at the worst possible time. His series average sits at an uncharacteristic .083, a disappointing start for a player who is usually reliable.

Adding to the challenge, the Dodgers’ pitching has been nearly untouchable, allowing only a handful of hits while frustrating Yankee bats. Moreover, Freddie Freeman, nursing an ankle sprain, has homered in every game of the series. Interestingly, for Yankees fans, the sting is all too familiar. Twenty years ago, the Red Sox made history at the Yankees’ expense, coming back from a 3-0 deficit in the American League Championship Series. Meanwhile, first baseman Anthony Rizzo acknowledges the difficulty of the task ahead but insists it’s possible. “It’s happened before,” Rizzo said, referring to the Red Sox’s legendary comeback. But for that to happen, the team would need to summon similar resilience, grit, and unshakable belief to make history of their own. The uphill battle starts with Tuesday’s game as the team must win, or their season ends.

This season, the New York Yankees have lived by Aaron Judge’s long ball. His leadership, offensive power, and ability to deliver under pressure make him the team’s best hope of defying the odds. However, his swings aren’t working in the World Series. “All it takes is one,” Judge said, hoping to spark a revival.

It’s a mantra that fans can only hope he turns into reality because, without Aaron Judge’s bat coming alive, any New York Yankees comeback will likely remain a pipe dream. Overall, in Game 4, the Yanks need Judge to break out of his slump, Juan Soto to get on base, and Jazz Chisholm’s spark to rally the dugout.
