Amid injury concerns, the New York Yankees made three crucial additions to their final 26-man opening-day roster.

The New York Yankees rotation issues are out in the open. To date, with just days to the 2023 MLB season opening day, the team does not have a solid starting rotation. After Frankie Montas went down with a recurring shoulder injury, Carlos Rodon, Tommy Kahnle, and LouTrivino followed him on the crowded injury list. Further, the Yankees dealt another blow as they finalized their 26-man roster.

Luis Severino, the Bombers’ only experienced pitcher after Gerrit Cole will likely begin his 2023 season on the injury list after suffering from a low-grade lat strain. With this, the pitching depth has now almost vanished. However, the Yanks are not yet giving up and have made three major additions to the final 26-man roster to make up for the loss.

Yankees Add Three Bullpen Throwers To Final Opening Day Roster

The New York Yankees have finalized their opening day roster for the 2023 season amid incessant injury concerns. The pitching depth consists of a leader, Gerrit Cole, along with Michael King, Clay Holmes, Jonathan Loaisiga, and Wandy Peralta. Further, the team filled in the remaining spot by adding these three bullpen members. Yankees skipper, Aaron Boone, announced that Ron Marinaccio, Jimmy Cordero, and Albert Abreu have successfully made it to the opening-day roster.

Ron Marinaccio‘s inclusion was a no-brainer, as he dominated the Grapefruit League. In 6.1 innings, he posted a 1.42 ERA and struck out 12 hitters. Coming back from an injury, Ron’s numbers certainly do not do justice to his real potential. Furthermore, the relief pitcher Jimmy Cordero set the stage on fire with 99 MPH sinkers throughout the spring sessions. In 9.0 innings, he struck out one hitter per inning and posted a 4.00 ERA.

Jimmy is coming off an impressive season in the minors and certainly deserves the spot. Last but not least, Albert Abreu received a surprise call-up as his spring numbers were not up to the mark. In 9.1 innings, he recorded a 5.79 ERA and struck out four hitters. Regardless, the pitcher has enough potential to end the Bombers’ injury woes.

Oswald Peraza, Matt Krook Demoted To Minors

Meanwhile, as the fans rejoiced about Anthony Volpe’s major league promotion, Oswald Peraza paid a hefty price. The number two prospect, who fought tooth and nail for the shortstop position, eventually lost the battle in a close contest. As a result, he is now assigned AAA Scranton and will begin the season in the minor league. Nonetheless, Peraza has a long shot of returning into the mix at a later stage of the tournament.

On the other hand, Matt Krook’s exclusion was unexpected, considering his spring training performance. Moreover, the Yankees needed the left-hand pitcher after Carlos Rodon went down with an injury. In 12.0 innings this spring, he posted a 3.75 ERA and struck out 15 hitters in total. However, the competition from Jhony Brito likely resulted in his ouster.
