“All Hands On Deck,” Yankees Starter Reflects On Potential Bullpen Demotion In Playoffs

The New York Yankees are headed to the 2024 MLB season playoffs after missing out on the same last year. This year has been an inspiring resurgence that has invoked the belief of a World Series title victory, the goal pending to be achieved for over 15 years now.

That being said, as the New York Yankees approach the postseason, the starting rotation will have to be trimmed down due to overflowing depth. While ace Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon appear confirmed picks, the third slot is up for grabs for as many as four starters, which clearly means a bullpen demotion is on the cards.

As the New York Yankees inch closer to clinching the AL East division crown, decisions regarding their playoff roster, particularly the pitching rotation, loom large. Veterans Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are likely to be key fixtures in the postseason rotation. However, the challenge remains in determining who will fill the remaining spots behind them. Nestor Cortes, Luis Gil, Clarke Schmidt, and Marcus Stroman are all strong options, making for a crowded and competitive situation. Meanwhile, Clarke Schmidt has been one of the most reliable starters this season, maintaining an impressive 2.55 ERA across 81.1 innings. Despite his success, Schmidt understands the realities of a deep rotation and is prepared to adapt going into the playoffs.

In a recent interview, Schmidt expressed his readiness to contribute in whatever way the team sees fit. If it leads to a bullpen demotion, so be it. For Schmidt, the opportunity to be featured in the playoffs is an honor in itself. He also believes that everyone on the Yankee roster is committed to contributing in whatever capacity they can, as the World Series dream is bigger than any individual. “When the postseason comes around, I think it’s all hands on deck. We’ll all be ready,” Schmidt said following a 5-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. Despite not yet having a postseason start under his belt, Schmidt’s flexibility and team-first mentality make him a valuable asset as the Yankees aim to secure their first World Series title since 2009. Whether starting or relieving, Clarke Schmidt’s presence will be key in the team’s high-stakes playoff run.

Yankees Ace Gerrit Cole Squashes Fatigue Concern

Reigning AL-CY Young starting pitcher Gerrit Cole will be New York Yankees trump card in upcoming postseason campaign. His 2024 season has been hampered by injuries and fatigue concerns. However, with just days left for playoffs, Cole says he didn’t feel fatigued while pitching nine-inning starts against the Athletics last week.

“I didn’t fatigue tonight, which is a good sign. I had more in the tank, which is also a good sign,” Gerrit Cole said. Notably, the Yankees ace hadn’t pitched the seventh, eighth, or ninth inning this entire season. Hence, going all the way deep into the ninth inning felt like a relief for the Ace. And for the Yanks, Cole’s resurgence comes at the right time.
